The FreeBSD Documentation Project
This document lists errata that pertain to the most
recently-released version of &os; (&release.current;). It includes
both security advisories that pertain this release, as well as
items relating to the software or documentation, discovered after
the release, that could affect its operation or usability.
At this time, &release.current; has no errata, because
there have not been any releases on the &release.branch;
branch since the last branchpoint. (The first such release will
be &release.next;.)
This file exists to provide a clean template for
newly-created branches. (Clearly this notice should not exist
on any branched version of this file.)
Introduction
If you read no other documentation before installing this
version of &os;, you should read
the errata for this release so that you don't stumble
over problems which have already been found and fixed. Any
version of this
ERRATA.TXT file actually distributed with the
release is out of
date by definition, but other copies are kept updated on the net and
should be consulted as the current errata
for your
release. These other copies of the errata are located at http://www.freebsd.org/releases/,
as well as any sites which keep up-to-date mirrors of this
location).
Source and binary snapshots of &release.current; also
contain up-to-date copies of this document (as of the time of the
snapshot).
Any changes to this file are also automatically emailed to the
&a.current;.

@MFS: Apply edits from 4-STABLE errata file to -CURRENT. Also add some
comments and notes to the effect that this file won't have any real
content until after 5.0-RELEASE.

log
@MFC: RELNOTESng.
I didn't MFC the changes to the release Makefile or the nuking of the
*.TXT files. We're not ready for that yet. I just wanted to get the
RELNOTESng sources for RELENG_4 into the repository so I can maintain
the content in parallel with the *.TXT version of the release notes.
These files include an SGML-ified version of RELENG_4's release notes,
plus the hardware compatability lists from HEAD (minus
CURRENT-specific features such as Cardbus support).

log
@Sync the RELNOTESng errata with the errata committed to the Web site.
Also try to define a little better what exactly the semantics of this
file are (in particular, what content might appear in this file and
how a user might obtain an up-to-date copy).
I'm not 100% satisfied with this, but it's better than what we had.

The vulnerability documented in security advisory
FreeBSD-SA-01:39 was fixed in &os; 4.3-RELEASE. The release
notes mentioned the fix, but made no mention of the security
advisory.

The release note entry for the ESS Maestro-3/Allegro sound
driver gave an incorrect command for loading the driver via
/boot/loader.conf. The correct command is:
snd_maestro3_load="YES"
&man.ssh.1; is no longer SUID root.
The primary manifestation of this change is that
.shosts authentication may not work
out of the box
. Both temporary and permanent fixes
are described in an item in the FAQ.

A vulnerability in the &man.fts.3; routines (used by
applications for recursively traversing a filesystem) could allow
a program to operate on files outside the intended directory
hierarchy. This bug, as well as a fix, is described in security
advisory FreeBSD-SA-01:40).
