If no Setup button appears, close the Chooser and skip ahead to the next section, "Removing Your Old Software." 3. If a Setup button does appear, click it. 4. In the dialog box that appears, make sure the Share This Printer box does not have an X inside. If you do see an X in the box, click on the X to remove it. 5. Close the Chooser. Removing Your Old Software -------------------------- ItÕs a good idea to remove your old software before installing your new software. To remove your old software, follow these steps: 1. Drag the Printing Prefs folder to the Trash. If you have System 7, the Printing Prefs folder is inside the Preferences folder in your System Folder. If you have System 6.0.7, the Printing Prefs folder is in your System Folder. 2. If you have Personal LW LS, LaserWriter Select 300, LaserWriter 300, StyleWriter, or StyleWriter II software on your system, then drag the software icons to the Trash. If you have System 7, the software is inside the Extensions folder in your System Folder. If you have System 6.0.7, the software is in your System Folder. 3. Drag Printer Share extension to the Trash. If you have System 7, the Printer Share software is in the Extensions folder in your System Folder. If you have System 6.0.7, the Printer Share software is in your System Folder. 4. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Your printer works best with Macintosh computers with system software version 7.0 or later installed, and that have hard disk drives with sufficient available space. You can also use your printer with system software version 6.0.7 or later installed on the hard drive of your Macintosh. LOW-MEMORY MACINTOSH COMPUTERS If your Macintosh with System 7 has just 2 Megabytes (MB) of RAM (or 1 MB with System 6), you may occasionally run short of memory. You know you are low on memory when some documents do not print, when a printed document doesn't look correct (for example, if text looks jagged instead of smooth), or when you see Òout of memoryÓ messages on your screen. To make more memory available, try these suggestions: * Open only one application at a time. * Print color or grayscale images in Black and White mode. * Make sure the RAM cache is turned off or set as low as possible. (To adjust the RAM cache, use the Memory control panel in System 7, or the Control Panel in System 6.) * If you're using System 6, make sure MultiFinder is turned off. (To turn MultiFinder off, choose Set Startup from the Special menu. In the dialog box that appears, choose Finder. The next time you start up or restart your Macintosh, MultiFinder will be turned off.) * If you are using System 7, try printing with background printing turned off. To turn off background printing, open the Chooser, click the icon of your printer (If you are unsure which Chooser printer icon to pick, refer to your printer's user's guide), and click the Off button next to Background Printing. * INIT files in the System Folder use up some of your Macintosh computer's RAM. Remove these files to free up some memory. * If you get "not enough memory" errors while printing to a shared printer, turn background printing off. If you have only 2 MBs of RAM (or 1 MB with System 6), you may want to add more in order to make your Macintosh work more effectively. See the information about service and support that came with your computer to find out who to contact about adding RAM to your Macintosh. PRINTING TIPS Follow these suggestions to get the best results with your printer: * It is recommended that you select Print Quality as Normal and Image as Grayscale in the Print dialog box because it gives you the best results with the fastest printing. (This is the default setting within the Print Dialog box.) * If you are using System 6 MultiFinder or System 7, it's a good idea to use background printing. This allows you to continue working on your Macintosh while your printer is printing. To turn on background printing, open the Chooser, click the icon of your printer (If you are unsure which Chooser printer icon to pick, refer to the user's guide that came with this software), and click the On button next to Background Printing. * You can connect your printer to either the modem port or the printer port. (Your printer port may already be used to connect your Macintosh to an AppleTalk network.) * If you use your printer with a PowerBook 100, you must connect it to the printer port because the modem port is internal on the PowerBook 100. Be sure to select the printer serial port in the Chooser after you install. * When sharing your printer, give it a unique name so that other users can tell which shared printers are listed in their Choosers. * Close the Chooser after making any printer setup changes. * If you have printer Sharing turned on, and you reinstall your printer software, you must turn Sharing on again. * If you have problems sharing your printer, reinstall your printer software. * If you use System 6.0.x and have a LaserWriter driver installed, that LaserWriter driver must be version 7.0 or later to be compatible with the Print Monitor that is used with this printer driver. * If you get the message "Serial port in use by another application, please quit the application and try again" and there is no other application running, restart your computer before sending another print job. * For best results, do not attempt to share the printer if you have a large image copied to your Clipboard. * If you have problems printing from an application program, try giving the application more memory. To give the application more memory, click the application icon to select it. Then choose Get Info from the File menu. In the window that appears, type the new size in the box labeled Current Size (If you have System 7.1, the box is labeled "Preferred Size.") * If you are having problems printing large, complicated documents in the background, try giving Print Monitor more memory by following the previous item's instructions. * For best results printing text, and if your applications supports it, turn 'Fractional Width' on before printing. * To install or remove fonts on System 6, you must use the Font/DA Mover that is on your original printer software disk set. USING THE PRINTER SOFTWARE WITH APPLICATION PROGRAMS Some application programs do not yet take advantage of your printer's new features. If you experience problems with your application programs, contact the publishers of the programs. Here are some suggestions for getting the best results from your application programs: 4th Dimension version 2.2.3 (Acius) Some documents print best at 100% scaling and in portrait (tall) orientation. Illustrator 3.2 (Adobe) For best results, use background printing and print at 100% scaling. Adobe Illustrator documents placed into other applications (for example, PageMaker) may print with gray outlines. Canvas 3.0 (Deneba) For best results, upgrade to version 3.0.4 or later. If you use Canvas 3.0.4 to create an image that has color patterns, print the image from Canvas rather than from another application. ClarisWorks 1.0v2 (Claris) For best results when printing a newly opened document that includes a chart, scroll the window to bring the chart into view before printing. DeltaGraph Pro 2.0 (DeltaPoint) Always click the QuickDraw button in the Print dialog box. Digital Darkroom 2.01 (Aldus) For best results, use the effects under the Image menu, rather than those under the Gray Maps menu. Freehand 3.0 (Aldus) For best results, print at 100% scaling, and turn background printing off. HyperCard 2.1 (Claris) Selecting Print Stack, will only allow you to print 16 cards per page. To get around this problem, type in a value larger than 100% in the Scaling field in the Page Setup dialog to get fewer cards per page. MacDraw Pro 1.5v1 (Claris) Color patterns printed in grayscale may show moirŽ patterns. To avoid moirŽ patterns, use solid colors instead of color patterns. Solid colors are chosen from the Claris Colors pallet of colors, which is to the left of the pattern pallet. MacWrite II 1.1v3 (Claris) The Collate option in the Print dialog box does not work. Mathematica 2.1 (Wolfram Research, Inc.) For best results printing color graphics, print using the Bitmap selection and turn background printing on. Microsoft Excel 4.0 To print using grayscale, set two options in the Print dialog box: choose Grayscale from the Image pop-up menu, and turn on Print Using Color. Microsoft PowerPoint 2.01f Handouts and Notes from landscape (wide) documents may not print correctly. For best results, upgrade to PowerPoint 3.0. Microsoft Works 2.0e For best results, upgrade to version 3.0 or later. If you use version 2.0e, turn off background printing in the Chooser. MORE 3.1 (Symantec Corporation) For best results, print at 100% or less. Ofoto 1.1 (Light Source, Inc.) For best results, upgrade to Ofoto 2.0 and create a custom calibration for your printer. Personal Press 2.0 (Aldus) For best results, turn background printing on. In some cases you may be able to correct printing problems by giving the application more memory. (Select the application icon, choose Get Info from the File menu, and type the new size in the Current Size field.) If Personal Press "unexpectedly quits" follow these steps: select another printer driver in the chooser, close the chooser, select Page Setup, save the document, reselect your printer's icon in the chooser, then print. If you are unsure which Chooser printer icon to pick, refer to the user's guide that came with your printer. PixelPaint 2.1 (SuperMac) For best results, print at 100% scaling or less. QuickTime 1.5 (Apple Computer) For best results, do not enlarge the image beyond the size of the selected page. Quicken 3.0 (Intuit) When printing with low memory, you may fail to print. Try the low-memory suggestions listed above. ReadySetGo 4.5 (Letraset) For best results, set your monitor to 256 colors or fewer. ReadySetGo 5.14 (Manhattan Graphics) Rotated objects may not print correctly. Symantec Greatworks 2.0 For best results when printing an envelope in landscape, select Black & White printing. TeachText (Apple Computer) If you get a system error 25, try the suggestions in the "Low-Memory Macintosh Computers" section above.
