CTU Marine Sharpshooter - Common technical problems. August 20, 2004. ================================================================ **Problem: When I try to play the game, I get a message stating "Cannot set D3D emulation mode". **Solution: This is a video problem that may be the result of a driver incompatibility between your video card and DirectX. To update the video driver, typically you want to contact your computer manufacturer (see a common list with links below) to find out if they have customized the video drivers (also see below for a list of video card manufacturer’s web sites and links) for your system. You can also check for updated drivers at your video card manufacturers’ website. Upgrading Direct X: Once you update your drivers you will want to run the DirectX install again. You can download and install the latest version of DirectX from Microsoft at: http://www.microsoft.com/directx. Make sure you select the link on that page for the DirectX that applies to your operating system. Many times game crashes are corrected by updating to the latest version of DirectX. You can update to the latest version by visiting Microsoft at the address above. IMPORTANT: after updating your video card drivers, please uninstall your program by using the Add/Remove Programs function in your Control Panel, restart your computer and reinstall the program. DISCLAIMER: Updating drivers is considered computer maintenance and is something we do not support. We assume no responsibility for the effects that changing the driver for your video card / video chipset may have on your system. Manufacturers update their video card drivers every few months. Even if you purchased a new computer today, it could have been sitting in inventory for a few months. It is very possible that your video card drivers are out of date. Follow the links above to update your video driver. You should also make sure you are running the most current version of DirectX. ================================================================ **Problem: I am unable to use the mouse wheel to zoom the scope in or out. **Solution: The problem with the scope is likely a result of your mouse wheel not being recognized. Does the wheel work in other programs? If so, you should be able to get it working by selecting Options from the Main Menu, then Controls, then Keyboard, scroll to the second screen where it says ‘zoom in’ and click on the default control so the item to the right says ‘select’, then roll your mouse wheel up. If it changes the command to ‘wheel up’, then it should work fine. Do the same for ‘zoom out’ only turn the mouse wheel down. If this does not work, you can select keyboard commands that will still allow you to use the scope with keyboard keys. From the main menu, select Options, then Controls, then Keyboard. Scroll to the second screen where it says ‘Zoom In’ and ‘Zoom Out’ and click on the current default key, which should say ‘Mouse Wheel’ and select a new key for each. This will allow you to use the keys you have selected from the keyboard to zoom in and out with the scope. You can change any of the default controls in the game using this method. ================================================================ **Problem: The game installs fine, but when I get to the main menu there are no options visible and/or the game seems to be locked up. **Solution: The game is not actually locked up; the problem is that the text on the initial menu screen appears in black instead of white. The game is working, but the main menu words are very difficult to see on the black background. To the bottom right of the yellow targeting reticule (lower right hand portion of your menu screen) you will notice some black letters that are very hard to see. This is the game menu, and the letters are supposed to be white, and are on other video cards. If you look closely you will see the words 'NEW GAME', click the mouse on them and the game will start. Once the game starts, if you escape ('ESC' key) to the main menu again the menu commands will now appear in white as they are supposed to. This is a small video driver problem specific to a few video cards. To correct this problem you will need to update your video card drivers. Please refer to the list of manufacturers above and update your video card driver. ================================================================ **Problem: My computer locks up or freezes when attempting to install the game. **Solution: Please close all running programs, especially anti virus software, before attempting to install the game. If this does not work, please follow these steps: -Open up My Computer and right click on your CDROM. -When the menu comes up, choose EXPLORE. -When Explorer opens, choose SELECT ALL from the EDIT menu. -Now select COPY from the EDIT menu. -Find somewhere on your computer (like you desktop), right click and select PASTE. This will copy the files to your hard drive, and will take some time to complete. -When the process is finished, double click on SETUP.EXE (the copy now on your hard drive) to install the game. This will completely eliminate the CDROM from the installation routine. ================================================================ If you have any other technical problems, please visit the following web sites for additional support: Developer support forums: http://www.jarheadgames.com/community/ Publisher homepage: http://www.groovegames.com/
