# 4022- OLE Issues OLE stands for Object Linking and Embedding and is technology designed by Microsoft to allow you to quickly and easily transfer and share information between Windows applications. CorelDRAW 4 was the first application to be released with support for OLE 2.0. CorelDRAW 4 revision C1 provides the most up to date *.DLL files available from Microsoft, based on OLE version 2.01. Note: The installation of Corel GALLERY , an OLE 2.0 compliant application, will maintain the same .DLL files as CorelDRAW 4 revision C. SHARE.EXE and OLE 2.0 In order for OLE 2.0 to function correctly, the appropriate *.DLL files, plus a SHARE statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT must be included. At the end of the CorelDRAW installation, choose Update Now when prompted to update the AUTOEXEC.BAT if this is your first installation of CorelDRAW 4. Answer Don't Update if you are performing a subsequent installation. Unless you're running Windows For Workgroups, SHARE.EXE is absolutely necessary for OLE 2.0 to function. Issues Running SHARE.EXE There are many types of computer configurations available that may conflict with the loading of SHARE.EXE. In most cases, these conflicts can be resolved by loading SHARE.EXE in the CONFIG.SYS instead of the AUTOEXEC.BAT. AUTOEXEC.BAT (as added by CorelDRAW) C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100 CONFIG.SYS (must be manually added) INSTALL=DRIVE:\PATH\SHARE.EXE /switches The /L: refers to the number of files that can be locked at one time. The /F: refers to the allocated file space (in bytes) for the MS-DOS storage area used for file sharing. CAUTION: Refer to the MS-DOS manual for the required switches. VSHARE.386 vs. SHARE.EXE VSHARE.386 is an alternative to SHARE when running Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups in 386 Enhanced mode. VSHARE.386 may eliminate conflicts encountered running SHARE. If available, this file resides in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. To enable VSHARE.386: 1. Using a text editor, remove SHARE.EXE from the AUTOEXEC.BAT. 2. Edit the [386Enh] section in the SYSTEM.INI to add the following line: DEVICE=VSHARE.386 3. Restart Windows. Note: If you are using applications that support Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) 2.0, you must run either SHARE.EXE or VSHARE.386. OLE 2.0 Registrations With Windows During the CorelDRAW 4 installation, each application is registered, for OLE functionality, in the Windows REG.DAT file. You can run the Registration Editor (REGEDIT.EXE) to ensure that this has been done. To do this, click File, Run, from the Program Manager. Type REGEDIT on the Open command line, and press ENTER. Known Problems With OLE 2.0 Microsoft Word 6 cannot create a link to a Corel PHOTO-PAINT associated file (eg. *.PCX) with the latest OLE *.DLLs. To workaround this, try one of the following: Open the file in Corel PHOTO-PAINT, and select the entire image. Click Edit Cut. Open Microsoft Word 6, and click Edit, Paste Special. Click Paste Link. If you are an experienced user, you can replace the OLE 2.01 *.DLLS with the OLE *.DLLs shipped with Microsoft Word 6. To do this remove all OLE *.DLLs from the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, and reinstall Microsoft Word 6.
