# 5750- Installing Corel PHOTO-PAINT™ 5 Before proceeding ensure the computer meets the minimum system requirements as listed on the Corel PHOTO-PAINT™ 5 box. It is also important that it meet the following criteria: Hard Drive Space Requirements The free hard drive space required depends on the hard drive's Allocation Unit (Cluster) size. Larger disk partitions have larger Allocation Units and require more disk space, while smaller disk partitions have smaller Allocation Units requiring less disk space. To determine Allocation Unit size on your drive(s), use the DOS CHKDSK command. The values used in this document for installing on a stand-alone system are based on 4096 byte Allocation Units. All installation options create a temporary directory, ~COREL.T, on the first fixed drive with approximately 1.0 MB free. Setup searches all fixed drives, including the RAMDRIVE, for available space. This directory is deleted when Setup has completed successfully. VSHARE.386 Corel PHOTO-PAINT 5 requires VSHARE.386 to be loaded on your system. Setup will automatically add the VSHARE statement to your SYSTEM.INI file. It will also create SYSTEM.COR, a backup file containing the SYSTEM.INI information prior to starting Setup. Corel PHOTO-PAINT 5 can be configured to run from a hard disk or network server. To begin the installation, first insert the Corel PHOTO-PAINT floppy disk #1, in the appropriate drive, then choose Run from the Windows Program Manager or File Manager. In the dialog box that appears, type the drive letter followed by :\setup or click the Browse button and select SETUP.EXE from the appropriate drive. Instructions will appear on the screen to guide you through the installation. The remainder of this chapter provides step-by-step instructions for installing Corel PHOTO-PAINT on your system. If you have any difficulty installing Corel PHOTO-PAINT, refer to the following sources of information: • The README.WRI file contained on floppy disk #1. This file contains last- minute information and troubleshooting tips. You can use a text editor such as Windows Write to read the file. • The "Technical Support" section found later in this chapter. Installing To The Hard Disk Setup can be run under Windows 3.1 or 3.11, or Windows for Workgroups 3.11. To install Corel PHOTO-PAINT from diskette: 1. Insert Disk #1 into the appropriate drive. 2. Click File, Run from the Program Manager. 3. Type A:\SETUP (or substitute the appropriate drive letter for A:), and press ENTER. The default path for installing Corel PHOTO-PAINT is X:\COREL50, where X:\ is drive letter assigned to the root directory under which Windows is installed. If adequate space is not available, or you prefer to install it in a different location, choose an alternate path. Full Install Option The Full Install method installs Corel PHOTO-PAINT, Corel CAPTURE, and Corel MOSAIC™. It allows you to choose from a selection of import and export filters, TrueType fonts, and scanner drivers. A Full Install from diskette will install a maximum of 10 TrueType fonts. The options offered under Full Install can be installed on multiple drives, or in a different directory structure than the suggested defaults. The dialog box provides a running account of the amount of disk space required, depending on the options you select. The Disk Usage indicator is based on the computer's Allocation Unit size. The initialization files are copied to the \COREL50\CONFIG directory. The WIN.INI, PROGMAN.INI, and REG.DAT files are updated. Backups of these files called WIN.COR, PROGMAN.COR, and REG.COR are created. These files contain pre-installation copies of WIN.INI, PROGMAN.INI, and REG.DAT. If Setup did not run successfully, copy these files over the ones Setup modified to restore the original files. The WIN.INI is updated with the following information in the following sections: [embedding] CPaint5=Corel PHOTO-PAINT 5.0 Image,Corel PHOTO-PAINT 5.0 Image,C:\COREL50\PROGRAMS\CORELPNT.EXE,picture [fonts] Corel PHOTO-PAINT fonts are registered and added to the [fonts] section of WIN.INI. [CorelGraphics5] Dir=drive:\COREL50\CONFIG Note: If you want to install a scanner driver, TWAIN.DLL is copied to the \WINDOWS directory, and a \WINDOWS\TWAIN\COREL directory is created. The REGLOAD.EXE file is only used during Setup and may be deleted afterwards Minimum/Custom Install Option This option provides two benefits: automatically installing a minimum set of application files, or allowing you to fine-tune the installation to meet your specific needs. If you are uncertain which options to choose, refer to the online Help. Additional files can be installed later, and corrupted files can be reinstalled using this option. You may also choose to install on multiple drives, or in a different directory structure than the suggested defaults. Clicking the Minimum/Custom install button displays the Customize Applications dialog box. It provides a running account of the amount of disk space required depending on the options selected. The Disk Usage indicator displayed in the dialog box, is based on the computer's Allocation Unit size. When you have completed the selection of applications, the Customize Options dialog box appears. In it you can choose from a selection of import and export filters, fonts, scanner drivers, and animation drivers. To make a customize button available, enable the checkbox associated with it. Clicking Customize opens dialog boxes in which you can specify which filters, scanners, etc. to install. Reinstalling Corel PHOTO-PAINT 5 Backup files contain user-definable information regarding Corel palettes, fill patterns, application configuration, etc. If you have customized files and wish to restore them, simply rename them to the original filenames. The WIN.INI, PROGMAN.INI, and REG.DAT files are backed up as WIN.COR, PROGMAN.COR, and REG.COR. These files contain pre-installation copies of WIN.INI, PROGMAN.INI, and REG.DAT. If Setup did not run successfully, simply copy these files over the ones Setup modified to restore the original files. INSTALLING COREL PHOTO-PAINT ON A NETWORK Corel PHOTO-PAINT includes all the files needed to install the program on a local area network (LAN). Once installed, Corel PHOTO-PAINT and its companion modules become available for concurrent access by multiple users. Installing Corel PHOTO-PAINT to a network is a two-step process: 1. Install Corel PHOTO-PAINT on the network server. 2. Set up Corel PHOTO-PAINT on a user workstation. Installing Corel PHOTO-PAINT On The Network Server Note: Before proceeding, please read the terms and conditions of your license agreement before installing on a network. Windows 3.1 or higher must be installed and working correctly from the network server before you install Corel PHOTO-PAINT 5. If you are installing Corel PHOTO-PAINT under a network version of Windows, you will need read/write/create access to the WINDOWS directory and read/write/create access to the directory where you want to install Corel PHOTO-PAINT. Note: The following instructions assume that you are using floppy drive A. Please substitute the appropriate drive letter for your system. 1. At the network administration workstation, insert Corel PHOTO-PAINT Disk #1 into the drive. 2. From the Windows Program Manager, click File, Run. 3. In the dialog box that appears, type the following line: A:\SETUP /A . Omitting the /A switch installs the standalone version of Corel PHOTO-PAINT. 4. Click OK. After a brief pause, the first Corel PHOTO-PAINT Setup dialog box appears. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation of Corel PHOTO-PAINT. The Setup program allows you to choose which components of Corel PHOTO-PAINT are installed on the server and what users will have access to. The Setup program copies files to the appropriate directories on the server. The following directories, which are not required in a non-network installation, are created: Note: Only network administrators will be asked for name and serial number when installing Corel PHOTO-PAINT 5. Redistributable Windows tools and .DLLs will also be copied to the shared WINDOWS directory if Setup was run under a network version of Windows 3.1. The USERDATA.INI File The Setup program creates a USERDATA.INI file on the network server. This file is in the COREL50\SETUP directory and identifies paths to the various Corel PHOTO-PAINT files. When users install Corel PHOTO-PAINT, the paths in their CORELAPP.INI file which identify the network directories where Corel PHOTO-PAINT is stored are automatically changed. The drive letters are overwritten by the letter of the drive from which the user ran Setup. This is done to accommodate users connecting to the network from different drives. The USERDATA.INI file also allows you to move the Corel PHOTO-PAINT directories to other locations on the network server. Moving Directories On The Network Server Once you've installed Corel PHOTO-PAINT on the network, you can move directories and the files they contain to other locations. If you move them, you must record the new locations in the USERDATA.INI file. You can use the FIXEDDRIVE parameter in the USERDATA.INI file to set the way the users connect to the network. If FIXEDDRIVE is TRUE, all users wishing to install Corel PHOTO-PAINT must connect to the network using the same drive letters as in USERDATA.INI. By default FIXEDDRIVE is FALSE. The network administrator can limit the available options to the users by changing the AVAILABLE statements in the USERDATA.INI file. For example, if the administrator wanted users to have access to Corel PHOTO-PAINT but not Corel MOSAIC, part of the USERDATA.INI file would look like the following: [00] AVAILABLE=YES SOURCEPATH=C:\COREL50\PHOTOPNT [04] AVAILABLE=NO SOURCEPATH=C:\COREL50\MOSAIC The Setup program creates a backup copy of the users' COREL*.INI file, a file containing configuration information for Corel PHOTO-PAINT. After running Setup, users can restore their original Corel PHOTO-PAINT configuration by opening the backup copy, (called COREL*.BAK), updating the path statements, then saving the file under the name COREL*.INI. Users should be aware that the paths in COREL*.BAK may be incorrect if files on the server have been moved since they first installed Corel PHOTO-PAINT, Setup also creates backup copies of Corel PHOTO-PAINT and Windows configuration files. The COREL*.BAK files contain user-editable information on color palettes, fill patterns and so on. Users can restore the information in these files by renaming them. The remaining files in the COREL50\CONFIG directory contain configuration information for other Corel PHOTO-PAINT modules. The path statements in these files must be updated before the files are renamed. Note: If users want to restore their original Windows configuration, (i.e. the configuration they had before installing Corel PHOTO-PAINT), then they can rename the *.COR files. Setting Up Corel PHOTO-PAINT On A User Workstation Users must run the Setup program SETUP.EXE to configure Corel PHOTO-PAINT. Setup copies some Corel PHOTO-PAINT files (usually to their local hard disks) that allow users to customize the program according to their preferences. Corel PHOTO-PAINT will install under the currently running copy of Windows regardless of whether it's the local copy or the network copy. SETUP.EXE is located in the SETUP directory under \COREL50. For example, if users access the network through drive N: they would run SETUP.EXE as follows: 1. Log onto the network. 2. From the Windows Program Manager, click File, Run. 3. In the dialog box that appears, type the following line: N:\COREL50\SETUP\SETUP 4. Click OK. After a brief pause, the first Corel PHOTO-PAINT Setup dialog box appears. Follow the instructions on the screen to set up Corel PHOTO-PAINT. Note: User access to shared program files is restricted by files installed by the Setup program on the network server. They are marked as read-only so there is no need to further restrict user access to the Corel PHOTO-PAINT directory. Users can have the Setup program copy the necessary files to a directory on their local hard disk or to a personal directory on the network. Assuming you installed Corel PHOTO-PAINT and all optional components, (i.e., you chose a full installation) each user will require enough disk space to accommodate the following files: The user can customize the selection of PHOTO-PAINT options, TrueType fonts and scanner drivers. The Setup Program Also... • Copies redistributable files needed for OLE 2.0 to the user's WINDOWS directory. • Registers the Corel PHOTO-PAINT applications and TrueType fonts. • Updates the user's WIN.INI file. Using Corel PHOTO-PAINT On A Network Users must connect to the same network drive letter each time they start Corel PHOTO-PAINT. For example, if a user connected to drive N to set up Corel PHOTO-PAINT on their local hard drive, then they must start the program from the same letter. If the user connects using another letter, Windows won't be able to find the shared Corel PHOTO-PAINT files. In all other respects, the network version of Corel PHOTO-PAINT operates identically to the non-network version. The COREL50.LOG File The Setup program records each step in the installation process in a text file called COREL50.LOG. If an installation fails, the information in this file can help our technical support staff determine what caused the failure. Setup puts the COREL50.LOG. file in the network administrator's and the users' WINDOWS directory. The file can be deleted following a successful installation. Note: Since Corel PHOTO-PAINT does not provide a file locking feature, you should advise users about the potential for losing personal files stored in shared directories. Tell them to store their files in their own personal network directories or on their local hard disks. Each installed version of Corel PHOTO-PAINT must have a registered copy.
