# 6011- CorelDRAW™ 6 FAQs Volume 1 The following document contains frequently asked questions about CorelDRAW™ 6. Note: "FIXED" indicates that Corel has identified and corrected these issues in the revision B 169 maintenance release of CorelDRAW 6. Other issues do not originate with your Corel software, and therefore workarounds are provided to overcome difficulties which may arise from normal use of this application . Install: Q Why is the error, "FILE = Common\List..."generated when I install CorelDRAW 6? A This error is most often caused by 16-bit (Real mode) CD-ROM device drivers being loaded in the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS, as opposed to using the native 32-bit (Protected mode) CD-ROM device drivers supplied with Windows® 95. Refer to Fax on Demand document #6002 for information about resolving this error. If this is not configuration resolved with document #6002, alternative installation methods are detailed in Fax on Demand document #6022. FIXED Q Why is the error, "Cannot Load the Executable.." generated when I install CorelDRAW 6? A This error may occur if you are installing CorelDRAW 6 to a Windows 3.1 platform, instead of the required Windows 95 platform. If Windows 95 is installed on the computer, confirm that a valid TEMP folder exists. To do this, click Start, Programs, MS-DOS prompt. Type SET. Your temp path statement will be displayed. Make sure at least 100 MB of free space is available on the hard drive that the TEMP folder is set to. If adequate space is not available, create a path to another drive in the AUTOEXEC.BAT. Refer to Fax on Demand document #2100 for information about this procedure. After the TEMP folder has been created, run setup again. This message may also be generated if the CD-ROM is operated by 16-bit drivers. Q Why can't I access different filter types after doing a custom install of CorelDRAW 6? A Many of the CorelDRAW import and export filters are not copied to the hard drive by default when performing a Custom Install. To resolve this, repeat the Custom Install and select all of the Import/Export filters. FIXED Q Why does my computer reboot after installing revision B 169? A This error may occur if the Quarterdeck QEMM 8.0 memory manager is installed on your the computer. Contact Quarterdeck for the latest revision of their software. General: Q Why am I getting an Invalid Page Fault (IPF) when opening the Layers Manager in CorelDRAW 6? A Clicking the Layers Manager in CorelDRAW 6 may cause an Invalid Page Fault (IPF) under certain conditions. To avoid this IPF, remove all 16-bit device drivers from the following configuration files: AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI and the SYSTEM.INI. Refer to Fax on Demand document #6001 for more information. FIXED Q How can I assign different functions to the right mouse button? A 1. Click Options, Advanced. In the Pop Up Menu Customization section, click an option from the First Menu Item list box, and click OK. The option that you choose from the First Menu Item list box will appear along the top of the pop-up menu that appears when you right click. If you click None, the standard pop-up menu appears. Q How can I set up CorelDRAW 6 so I have the same Text RollUp I used in CorelDRAW 5? A Click View, Toolbars and click the Text toolbar. Use the mouse to drag the right side of the open toolbar window until it resembles the CorelDRAW 5 RollUp. Q Why have I been experiencing IPF errors in CorelDRAW since I installed my drawing tablet? A Many of the drivers for these devices become corrupted in the Windows 95 environment. To check this, click Start, Settings, Control Panel. Double-click the Mouse icon and click General. If the highlighted area displays machine language, or "gibberish", remove and reinstall the driver. If the problem persists, contact the manufacturer and verify that the driver is Windows 95 compatible. Issues with the Layers RollUp, View Manager, and Select by Attributes RollUp have been reported when using 16-bit drivers with CorelDRAW 6. Issues include no listing within the detail areas of these RollUps. To work around this, disable the Tablet Manager which is installed with the tablet. Also, try using the puck as a mouse with no predefined functions. OLE: Q Why am I experiencing problems with certain OLE functions? A Numerous fixes were applied to the OLE Automated functions in revision B 169 including: • Memory issues when copying and pasting large number of bitmaps. • Copying, Cutting, or Pasting a PowerClip with a Lens on or in it. • IPFs occurring when text from a Text On Path object is cut and pasted back. • Issues with Corel SCRIPT Editor™ no longer registered as a Server application. • Pasting objects from within the Object Data Manager. • Corrupted objects when performing Cut or Paste while recording a Preset. FIXED Miscellaneous: Q Why can't I get the Fish-Eye lenses to work on bitmaps? A This lens option is designed for use with vector objects only. Q What is the purpose of enabling the Enable Multitasking check box found by clicking Tools, Options, Advanced? A The Enable MultiTasking option is recommended only when you want to print a file, while concurrently editing another file within the same CorelDRAW session. File input functions have not been optimized for use with this switch. Using this switch in conjunction with File I/O operations may lead to unstable behavior within the application. Q I use CorelDRAW for architectural drafting work. When I copy and paste objects marked with the call-out dimensioning tool from page-to-page in multiple-page documents, I receive out-of-memory messages, and sometimes even an IPF error. How can I avoid this? A To resolve this, marquis-select the objects, click View, Separate. Now the objects and the call-out flags will copy and paste without error messages. Q I am extruding one object and one text item, both using the same fill. When I apply a light source to the object, the light source changes, but when the same light source is applied to the text, the light source does not change or the color is a different shade. How can I overcome this? A Convert the text to curves before applying the extrusion effect. To do this, click the text with the Pick tool and click Arrange, Convert to curves. Q Which settings are actually saved when clicking Tools, Save Settings? A The following settings are saved and applied to all new files when Save Settings is invoked: • Page Setup (orientation, page color, show border, etc.) • View Settings (wireframe, preview, rulers visible/not, bitmap display) • Rulers, Grid and Guidelines setup (including global variables) • Levels of Undo • Nudge and Place Duplicate/Clone settings • Fountain Fill steps settings & Extrude Facet Size setting • Text options, including Greek Text Below, Frame Formatting, Non-Printing Character • Print Range, Proofreading and Type Assist settings Q Is it possible to make a custom color palette in CorelDRAW 6, and send it to my friends who use CorelDRAW 3 or 4? A No, this is not possible. CorelDRAW 3 and 4 use *.PAL palettes, CorelDRAW 5, 6 and 7 use *.CPL palettes. To workaround this, note the CMYK values for each new custom color and then pass it on to the other person to add to their custom color palette. Q Why can't I edit my Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) files when I import them into CorelDRAW 6? A If you import them using the Encapsulated PostScript filter, a picture of the information in the EPS file is placed on the page. This is called the image header. Note, that the Status Bar reports the objects as a bitmap with an EPS file attached. If you use the PostScript Interpreted (PS) filter to open the image into CorelDRAW, it will be presented to you in vector format for editing. Q When I export a file using two-color bitmap pattern fills from CorelDRAW as a Windows Metafile (WMF), and reimport the file, the result is a grayed-out image. Why? A This is a limitation of the software, as described in the README file that installs with the CorelDRAW 6 Suite. This information is also available in the online Help. To workaround this, export the file using the Enhanced Windows Metafile (EMF) filter.
