# 6023- Corel PHOTO-PAINT™ 6 FAQs The following document describes the most frequently asked questions about Corel PHOTO- PAINT™ 6. Note: "FIXED" indicates that Corel has identified and corrected these issues in the revision B 169 maintenance release of CorelDRAW™ 6 which is currently available. Other issues do not originate with your Corel software, and therefore workarounds are provided to overcome difficulties which may arise from normal use of this application . How Do I... Q How do I install the same Shape tool I used in Corel PHOTO-PAINT 5? A Click Tools, Options, General. Set the Cursor list box to Shape (118) or Use Shape Cursor (169). Q I have a 256 color image that I want to edit, but the effects are grayed out. How do I correct this? A Convert the image to at least 24-bit color. Unlike Corel PHOTO-PAINT 5, Corel PHOTO- PAINT 6 does not automatically convert all images to 24-bit color. Effects must be applied to 3 channel color images. FIXED Q How do I create a transparent .GIF in Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6 for use on the World Wide Web? A Save the image as a GIF89a, and enable the interlaced check box. This allows faster loading of the image. Click Adaptive color, and click the transparent color from the color index. For more information refer to Fax on Demand document #6015. Q Why can't I find the .GIF filter in the Save As dialog box in Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6? A The image to must be in the 256 color format to use the. GIF filter. The .GIF filter will not appear in the list until the image is converted. Q How do I install Kai's Power Tools® for use with Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6? A Install Kai's Power Tools to a folder on the hard drive. From within Corel PHOTO-PAINT, click Tools, Options, Filters. Click Insert, and scroll to the hard drive location of the filters. Kai's Power Tools 3.0 are only compatible with Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6 revision B 169. In addition, the patch file PAINT169.EXE or PAINTSA.EXE (Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6 Stand-alone) must be installed on the system. This patch may be obtained from the Corel BBS or from our World Wide Web site. Q I can scan into Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6, however the image is distorted. Sometimes the system hangs after the prescan. Why? A Click Tools, Options, Advanced. Experiment with the various File Transfer Modes to find the one that is compatible with your scanner. Q When creating a mask from an object, such as text, the object appears to become unmoveable. Why? The manual indicates that this should be possible. A This can be caused if the Preserve Image option is not clicked. If you click Image, Preserve Image and repeat the procedure from the manual, the text will exist on top of the mask and can be moved. Q I have a scanner that is not on the list of CorelDRAW 6 supported scanners, and I cannot seem to get it to work with Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6. What should I do? A Install the TWAIN driver that accompanied your scanner. Refer to Fax on Demand document #6014 for detailed information on Scanner Issues. Q I am running Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6 on a Windows NT® platform. Can I scan directly into the application? A Scanning for Windows NT is now supported in revision B 169. This revision ships with application layer software, a scanner registration file, and a SCSI driver. The scanner must be attached to a 32-bit SCSI card in order to function properly with the Corel image source. Q How do I perform batch scanning (scan multiple documents using a scanner that supports a document feeder) in Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6? A In order to scan multiple documents in Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6 you must use one of the Corel TWAIN sources. A Corel TWAIN dialog box will appear when Acquire Image is clicked. Click Custom to locate the document feeder option. As the scanner scans each page it will create a file by the name of SCAN0.BMP, SCAN1.BMP, etc. and place these in the Windows TEMP folder. When the batch scan has been completed, and the document is closed, you will be prompted to save each scanned page. Duotones Q Why is the Duotone option grayed out? A Color images must be converted to grayscale before converting to a Duotone. Q Some of the Duotone images I have created print incorrectly from Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6 and other applications if I save them using the EPS file format. Why? A This is directly related to the application you are printing from. If the Duotone was created from a file that was originally in TIF format, the printouts may become skewed when printed. As a workaround, resample the image to 101% before converting the image to a Duotone. FIXED Q If I create a Duotone in Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6 , save it as an EPS file, and import it into other applications to print to a PostScript printer as a composite image, it does not print in color. Why? A Color information in a Duotone image is tagged to a grayscale file. The tagged information may be dropped in the printing process. If your Duotone image will not print in color, try printing to a device with a Non-PostScript printer driver. Open/Save Filters Q Why can't I save as an EPS file if I create a CMYK file and place a mask over it? A To correct this, open the CORELFLT.INI file located in the \COREL\CONFIG\ folder and change the line: FilterCapability1=0x709f to read FilterCapability1=0x70df FIXED Q Why am I receiving the error "Cannot read .PCD file"? A The Kodak Photo CD import filter relies on the PCDLIB32.DLL file which is located in the COREL\PROGRAMS folder. If an error message appears when using the Kodak Photo CD import filter (.PCD) or if the PCD import is not working correctly, verify that you have the latest version of the PCDLIB32.DLL file installed on your system. The PCDLIB32.DLL file that ships with CorelDRAW 6 has an uncompressed file size of 148480 bytes and a date of 3/25/94. Also note that any occurrence of this .DLL file in the \WINDOWS folder may cause problems. If this file is found in the \WINDOWS folder, rename it to PCDLIB32.BAK. Should you overwrite the PCDLIB32.DLL that was installed with CorelDRAW 6, there is a second copy of the file in the COREL\PROGRAMS folder on CD-ROM #1 that can be copied into the \COREL folder on the hard drive. Q Why can't JPEG files be opened once I have clicked Edit, Checkpoint, File Save? A When you specify a Checkpoint, Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6 saves the file in the .CPT format, and not as a .JPG file. You can open the file by clicking it, and clicking the Corel PHOTO-PAINT .CPT filter from Files of Type list box, or remove the .JPG extension from the file by renaming it in Windows Explorer. FIXED Q I installed Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6 using the Custom install option and now I cannot open any files. What can I do? A Depending upon TSRs or drivers installed on the computer, this may occur during the installation process. To avoid the problem, a Custom install of any module should include the installation of the Import/Export filters. This reinitializes all the filters. To correct an existing condition, perform a Custom installation and enable the Import/Export filter check boxes only. FIXED Other Q Why won't Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6 launch? A If you have recently changed components on the computer, power to the computer may have been interrupted long enough to lose the Windows clock setting. Often the clock is set to the year 2037 or 2096. Reestablish the correct time setting, and launch Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6. If this does not work, try renaming the PHOTOPNT.INI file to PHOTOPNT.XXX and relaunching the application. The PHOTOPNT.INI file is located in the COREL\CONFIG folder. Q I am experiencing an Invalid Page Fault (IPF) error when I try to open the Color Mask RollUp. Why is this happening, and what can I do to correct the problem? A This problem results from operating the mouse with 16-bit drivers in Windows 95. Follow the instructions in Fax on Demand document #6001 to load appropriate 32-bit drivers. Q Why am I receiving the error message "Windows could not write to the printer spool file" and printing very slowly? A There are two solutions to this issue, perform one of the following: • Click Print, Options, Options, Special Settings. Click Driver Banding, and click Send Bands to Driver. • Click Print, Options, Options, Special Settings. Click Bitmap Printing, and click Output Entire Bitmap. Q Why do I get the error message "Could not load C:\COREL \ PLUGINS \ KPTGRAD2.8BF" when I click Effects, Render, Julia Set Explorer 2.0, CTRL + G during a Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6 session. A You must have Kai's Power Tools version 2 or higher installed on the computer before this feature can be accessed. Q Why can't I see all of the objects in the Objects, Channels RollUp? A This problem results from operating the mouse with 16-bit drivers in Windows 95. Follow the instructions in Fax on Demand document #6001 to load appropriate 32-bit drivers. Q Why am I receiving a Divide by Zero error when replacing colors in Corel PHOTO-PAINT 6? A This error may occur if you click Effects, Color Adjust, Replace Colors, and use the Eyedropper tool to define an area of the bitmap to be replaced. If a New Color is clicked to replace the original color, an illegal operation error may be generated in module PICOR60.DLL. To correct this, click the new color first, and use the Eyedropper tool to click the color to be replaced. Click Preview or OK and the error will be generated.
