Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) allows a document from one application to be embedded within or linked to a document in another application. When using OLE 2.0 with CorelDRAW(TM) 7, the following may be experienced: When dragging objects between applications, a small circle with 8 squares may appear instead of the original object. Clicking Edit, Insert Object, Create New does not launch the desired application. Clicking Edit, Insert Object, Create from File does not insert the desired object. Double- clicking the .REG file generates the message "This is not a registration file..." Before attempting to resolve these issues, take the following precautions: Create a Startup disk for the recovery of basic computer function in the event of a complete system failure. The Startup disk is created during the Windows 95 installation process or by clicking Start, Settings, Control Panel, double-clicking Add-Remove Programs, and clicking Startup Disk, Create. Copy the SYSTEM.DAT, USER.DAT, CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files, plus any CD-ROM or necessary device drivers to a folder on the Startup disk, or to an additional disk. Disable the Windows background, screen saver and any third-party applications and remove all applications from the StartUp folder. Refer to Fax on Demand document #2100 for instructions. To resolve this issue, perform one or more of the following steps: 1. Register the applications by, opening the application, then closing it, or by double-clicking the *.REG files for the application. To do this click Start, Programs, Windows Explorer. Double- click the DRAW70 folder . Press F3. Type *.REG on the Named command line and click Find Now. Click Edit, Select All and press ENTER. This action will display a dialogue box confirming successful registration for each *.REG file. 2. Perform an OLE function. To do this the use Cut / Copy and Paste commands. If this functions normally, but other OLE problems persist (i.e. corrupted objects etc.), the application being used to embed or link objects in CorelDRAW 7 may not be fully OLE 2.0 compliant. 3. Uninstall and reinstall the application. This may restore the OLE capacity to the application. 4. Check for a valid SET TEMP statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The statement should be pointing to a valid drive and folder, i.e. SET TEMP = C:\TEMP. To determine where the TEMPfiles are located, type SET at a DOS prompt. 5. Install the Standard VGA display drivers. To do this, click Start, Settings, Control Panel. Double-click the Display icon. Click Settings, Change Display Type, Change Adapter Type, Show all devices. In the Manufacturers list box click Standard display types, in the Models list box click Standard Display Adapter (VGA). If OLE is functioning normally while using a Standard VGA display driver, it is possible that the OLE feature has been disrupted as a result of a video conflict. Contact the Video Manufacturer for an updated or compatible driver.
