A scanning device converts light reflected from the surface of an image, or light filtered through an image, into digital information which can be read by a computer. This is achieved by dividing the image into individual pixels, and recording the intensity of light reflected from or transmitted through the image at each pixel location. An internal light source emits a full-spectrum white light which is analyzed by detectors mounted behind red, blue, and green filters. The color detected at each pixel location is converted into its red, blue, and green components, and then stored in the computer as a bitmap or Raster image file. The digital information in the file can be manipulated with graphics application software. Corel has enhanced this technology in Corel PHOTO-PAINT and in Corel OCR-TRACE by providing a 32-bit image source which is compatible with Windows 95. The result is scanner software which operates faster and more efficiently in protected memory space. Multitasking is now possible during the scanning operation, and module errors do not interrupt the operation of other applications. Corel PHOTO-PAINT and Corel OCR-TRACE are compatible with 16-bit or 32-bit Twain interfaces, and images are scanned directly into these Corel applications. Installation Criteria: Scanners Directly Supported by CorelDRAW 7 include: Epson ES Series Fujitsu ScanPartner Fujitsu M309xx HP ScanJet Kodak PhotoCD Panasonic FX-R5308c UMAX UC630/1200s Microtek SM II and III Nikon COOLSCAN RICOH IS/FS2 & IBM 2456 Installation of Corel Scanner Drivers For computers fitted with an adapter using 32-bit drivers, scanner software supported by CorelDRAW 7 and recognized by Windows 95, a complete installation is achieved by performing a Custom install of CorelDRAW 7. Enable the Select Scanners check box and click the appropriate scanner from the Details list box. If CorelDRAW 7 has already been installed, this method may also be used to install scanner support retroactively. Note, during any Custom install procedure, all Import/Export Filters must be selected in addition to the desired components. Note: Many manufacturers are currently supplying 32-bit drivers for their scanning devices. If the computer is equipped with an adapter using 32-bit software, the scanner may be upgraded to operate in a 32-bit environment, even if it is not directly supported by native Corel software. For computers fitted with a 32-bit adapter not recognized by Windows 95, or a scanner not supported by CorelDRAW 7, use the software and driver provided by the scanner vendor. Installation for 16-bit Adapter or Parallel Port Scanners Use the install instructions supplied with the scanner software to load the TWAIN interface into the operating system of the computer. The 16-bit GUI interface for your scanner may not be visible from the Corel application. To resolve this, perform a Custom installation and install the Kodak Photo CD image source. The Kodak Photo CD image source will appear as an option by clicking File, Acquire Image, Select Source. It is used only to provide the necessary software modules for scanning with 16-bit device drivers. It should not be selected as a scanner source. Click the installed scanner by clicking File, Acquire Source Image, Select Source, and click File, Acquire Image, Acquire. The 16-bit scanner interface should be displayed and used to scan the image into the Corel application. Installation for No Twain-Compliant Scanners (16-bit or 32-bit) Scanners which are not Twain-compliant must be installed as stand-alone components. Use the software supplied with the scanner to install it on the computer. The scanned images may be saved to a file from the scanning application and then opened into Corel PHOTO-PAINT or Corel OCR-TRACE. Error Messages 1. TWAIN ERROR - No Scanner Source Found If this message is generated by a Corel supported scanner installation then Corel 32-bit drivers have been loaded, but the system is equipped with a 16-bit adapter, or a parallel port. Verify this by clicking Start, Settings Control Panel. Double-click the System icon, and click Device Manager. If the ! warning is displayed on the adapter or an adapter does not appear, the computer is equipped with a 16-bit adapter and software, or Windows 95 does not recognize the adapter. This may be resolved by using the installation method described in the "Installation for 16-bit Adapter or Parallel Port" section of this document or by obtaining a Windows 95 supported 32-bit driver. If this message is generated by a non-Corel scanner installation contact the scanner software vendor. 2. TWAIN ERROR - Communications Errors This error may be generated when using non-Corel drivers in Corel PHOTO-PAINT. Resolve this by clicking Tools, Options, Advanced, and changing the Transfer Mode to File, or Buffered. 3. TWAIN DRIVER ERROR - Sorry, could not find the Twain Source Manager (Twain_32.dll). Copy the Twain Source Manager from the original disks to the Windows folder. Perform a Custom installation to install the appropriate scanner. 4. TWAIN DRIVER ERROR - Sorry, no Twain Source found in Twain Directory (CRTLWN32.dll). See TWAIN source installation instructions. For scanners supported by CorelDRAW 7, the common dialog box CRTLWN32.DLL is missing from the WINDOWS\TWAIN_32\COREL folder. Perform a Custom installation to reinstall the scanner. For scanners that are not directly supported by Corel image sources, the proprietary scanner files (*.DS, *.DLL) are missing from the computer. Reinstall the vendor-supplied scanner software. 5. FATAL ERROR - Could not find C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN_32\COREL\hpsj32.dll Reinstall the vendor supplied scanner software. 6. SCSI ERROR - No Scanner! Scanner is not installed, not connected, or was not turned on before booting the computer. 7. TWAIN DRIVER ERROR - Sorry, there is a TWAIN error The scanner is not connected, or was not turned on before booting the computer. Reboot the computer with the scanner powered on to initialize the WIN.INI file.
