# 3423- Text & Type - FAQs The following document contains answers to frequently asked questions with regards to TEXT and CorelDRAW™ 7. Q When certain individual characters are typed followed by a period ,e.g, s., and a space, the characters are replaced with a word e.g., sincerely. How can I change this? A To resolve this, click Tools, Options, Type Assist. Disable the Replace Text While Typing check box. Q When printing text to certain printers, single characters may be dropped. A This issue has been addressed and corrected for most printers in a patch, named D7375.EXE. This patch is available on the Corel Website, FTP, BBS, and CompuServe. This has been addressed for all printers by obtaining build 467 of CorelDRAW 7. This build is available by contacting Customer Service. Q Why am I getting "The current setting for this document will cause x fonts to be downloaded to the printer. This could overun memory and prevent page(s) from printing..." error when printing to a PostScript device? A To resolve this, click File, Print, Options, Options, PostScript Preferences. In the Fonts section, disable the Convert True Type to Type1 and the Download Type 1 fonts check boxes. Q Why is the Apply button in the Effects RollUp, grayed when I try to apply an effect to text? A There are specific limitations or characteristics for each type of text. Artistic text will allow you to apply any effect you wish but has a limitation as to how many characters can be in a single string. Paragraph text will allow more characters per string but certain effects can not be applied. Try converting the Paragraph Text to Artistic Text, to do this click, Text, Convert to Artistic Text. Q Why do the fonts display incorrectly in CorelDRAW 7? A If a specific font is displaying incorrectly or seems to be substituted with a generic font, the font may be damaged or corrupted. There are a number of ways to confirm if a font is corrupt. Open another application (i.e. Wordpad) and try to use the font. If the font appears incorrectly in another application, then the font is most likely corrupt. To resolve this, click Start, Settings, Control Panel. Double-click the Fonts icon, and click View Details. Click the word Size; and this will organize the way the fonts are being displayed from smallest to largest. If a file size is 2KB or smaller, this indicates a corrupted font and the font should be deleted and reinstalled. If no fonts appear corrupted in the list of fonts on the system, check to see how many fonts are installed. The number of fonts will appear in the bottom left hand corner of the Fonts window. It is strongly recommended that the number of Corel fonts installed on the computer, not exceed 500 due to possible Registry corruption. If you are experiencing irregular font displays or font related error messages, refer to Fax on Demand document #2102. Q Why am I receiving an Illegal Operation error when I click on the Text tool in CorelDRAW 7? A To resolve this, click Tools, Options, Font. Ensure all four check boxes are enabled under Fonts List Contents. The error is will occur if an older version of Adobe Type Manager is installed on the computer. Windows® 95 requires a minimum of Adobe Type Manager 3.01 Q Why does an Invalid Page Fault (IPF) in module WTSPE61.dll get generated when I am typing text, importing a file, or accessing the Text tool? A To Resolve this, click Tools, Options, Spelling. Disable the Perform Automatic Spell Checking check box. This will not disable the spell checking ability, only the correct-as-you-go feature. Q Why does the text pasted from CorelDRAW 7 into Microsoft® Word97 appear jaggy and unclear? A If text is selected with the Pick tool in CorelDRAW 7, and copy/pasted into Microsoft Word, the text will paste as a metafile. OLE objects in Microsoft Word do not support Font Smoothing. This is the reason the text appears jaggy and unclear. If Font Smoothing is disabled in CorelDRAW 7, you will immediately see that the copied text is quite similar to the pasted text in Microsoft Word. To disable the Font Smoothing, click Tools, Options, Text, and disable the Smooth Edges of Screen Fonts check box. Note: If text is block selected, and copied from CorelDRAW into Microsoft Word, the text will be unformatted, and lose the font information. This is normal, and all applications act in this way. Q Is it possible to import Microsoft Word 97 documents into CorelDRAW 7? A In Microsoft Word 97, save the document as a Microsoft Word 6 file, and import the file into CorelDRAW 7. Q Why can't I access extended characters using ALT key combinations in CorelDRAW 7? A To ensure the extended characters of a font are available, enable NUM LOCK. To check the extended characters of a font and the key stroke required to access them, refer to the Character Map utility in Windows 95. This is found by clicking Start, Programs, Accessories. Q Why doesn't reversed text print correctly? A This issue has been addressed and corrected in build 467 of CorelDRAW 7. This build is available by contacting Customer Service. Q Why can't I bold or italicize some of my fonts? A Depending on the font selected, corresponding font variations may not be installed on the computer. For more information about installing fonts, refer to Fax on Demand document #3405 and #2102. Q How can I fit text along a path? A There are two methods of fitting text to a path in CorelDRAW 7: Method 1: Using the Interactive Text tool Click the Text tool, and place the cursor on the edge of the object or curve intended to be the path. The Interactive cursor will change from an "A" to a "I". Click the path. As you type, the text will fit to the path. In order to change the orientation or quadrant positioning of the text, the Fit Text to Path RollUp is required. To access this, click Text, Fit Text to Path. Orientation /quadrant positioning can also be adjusted from the Property Bar when in Fit Text to Path mode. Method 2: Using the traditional Text to Path RollUp Artistic text can also be fit to a path by selecting both the text and the path, and clicking apply from the RollUp. Q How can I find a particular symbol that is in the manual, but not in the Symbols RollUp? A If a specific symbol is not in the Symbols list box, it must be installed as a new font. For more information about installing fonts and symbols, refer to Fax on Demand document #3400, #3405, and #2102. Q I created a file in CorelDRAW 7 which contained multiple fonts. I took this file to another system and opened it there. All my fonts are different. Is there a way around this? A When saving a file in CorelDRAW 7, enable the Embed fonts using TrueDoc check box in the Save As dialog box. Use this option if you aren't sure what fonts are available on other computers or output devices you will be using with this file. If the destination system does not have a program like CorelDRAW 7 which supports TrueDoc, then converting the text to curves may be the best solution. Note: Text that is converted to curves will no longer be editable text. Q Why is it when I open certain files, a "Panose Font Matching" message appears and attempts to substitute fonts that aren't in my original document? A This can occur with CorelDRAW *.CDR files that were originally saved with Text Style font information embedded. If possible the file should be saved in the original application without styles information. Open the file in the original application and launch the Styles Manager. The Styles Manager will show all the different text styles associated with the file. Alternatively, adding or installing the fonts that are being substituted to your system should resolve this issue as long as those fonts are available.
