# 3450 - CorelDRAW™ 8 Frequently Asked Questions The following document contains frequently asked questions and answers for CorelDRAW™ 8. Installation Q How do I perform a Network installation? A A Network Installation requires additional licences for the workstations that you will be installing the applications to. Contact your local Corel Approved Reseller to purchase additional licences. These licenses will include full installation instructions. Q When I installed CorelDRAW 8, CD-ROM #1 was the only CD-ROM required. How do I install CD-ROM #2, and 3? A CD-ROM #2, and 3 do not install. They contain ClipArt, photos, sample files, brushes, etc, and are used in conjunction with the application modules. Q I just installed CorelDRAW 8 and CorelDREAM 3D™ 8 did not install. How do I install it? A CorelDREAM 3D 8 has its own installation routine. Insert CD-ROM #1 into the CD-ROM drive. When the autorun splash screen appears, select the CorelDREAM 3D setup. If the autorun has been disabled, the setup can be run manually by click on Start, Run, and typing X:\D3DSETUP.EXE (where X: is the CD-ROM drive letter) Q I keep getting errors when I install CorelDRAW 8. How can I get it installed successfully? A Errors during installation are usually the result of a conflict with a TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) program, or device driver. Refer to Fax on Demand document # 3451 - Installation Instructions/FAQs for clean installation guidelines. Q During the installation, a series of error messages occur indicating that some source files could not be found on CD #1. A These errors will occur when one or more drives is running in MS-DOS Compatibility Mode. When a CD ROM drive is running in this mode, it is likely due to the use of 16-bit CD ROM drivers. Update the CD ROM drivers to the 32-bit Windows® 95 drivers to resolve this issue. Printing and Color Management Q I can't find a color profile for my printer. Where can I get one? A Ask your printer manufacturer if they have any color profiles available, or check their web site. Corel also has color profiles for various printers on the web at www.corel.com. Q I am unable to print right to the edges of the page with my inkjet printer. A This is a physical limitation of most inkjet style printers. CorelDRAW's Print Preview will indicate the unprintable boundaries of the page layout as reported by the printer driver. These cannot be reduced. Q The bitmap or texture in the document will not print to my inkjet or non-PostScript printer? A Click, File, Print Preview. Select Settings, Driver Compatibility. Enable Output bitmaps in 64k chunks. Clipart Q I am unable to access the clipart folder on CD #2 while running Windows® NT 4.0. A To access the clipart folder on CD #2, you must have either: Internet Explorer 4.0 (the Standard Installation, not the browser only installation) or the Corel MEDIA FOLDERS™ installed. Q I do not see the thumbnails of files that are stored in a MEDIA FOLDER on a network drive. A Close down all applications. Open the CORELAPP.INI file found in the \Corel\Graphics8\Config folder in Notepad. Look for the line NoThumbnailsForNetworkedFiles=1 and change its value to equal 0. Restart Windows. Fonts Q I have some font problems. I am experiencing any of the following symptoms: - When I launch CorelDRAW™ a message tells me that there are no fonts found; - I am trying to install Fonts in the Windows font folder and it keeps telling me that the font file may be corrupt or damaged and to contact the vendor; - I have installed some fonts and they do not show in the font list. A There may be too many fonts installed on the system. For information on resolving this issue, look for document #2102 Windows 95 Font Issues in the General category of the All Other Products list on the Corel Technical Support web page. Or dial our Fax On Demand system at 613-728-0826, ext. 3080 and request document #2102. Q How do I install the Symbols that are included with CorelDRAW? A Insert CD #1 into the CD ROM drive. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel. Double-click on the Fonts icon. Click on the File menu and select Install New Font. Change the Drive letter to the CD ROM drive. In the list of folders, change to the \fonts\symbols\ttf folder. After a short pause, the list of Symbols fonts will be displayed in the List Of Fonts window. Select the font(s) you wish to install and click the OK button. Q I do not have the Bold or Italic capabilities for certain fonts in CorelDRAW. I can make this font Bold and Italic in other applications. A CorelDRAW requires that the Bold and Italic font styles for fonts be installed in Windows before the Bold and Italic options become available in CorelDRAW. Other applications may "simulate" the bold and italic styles with fonts. Display / Menu Q I know longer have my pull-down menus. How do I get them back? A Click on Start, Programs, CorelDRAW program group and before selecting the CorelDRAW 8 shortcut icon, press and hold down the F8 key on the keyboard. Q The status bar stopped indicating the information of a selected object in CorelDRAW. A Right-click on the Status Bar and select Reset. Q When I apply a fountain fill, my preview window in the fountain fill dialog is all black, even though it shows correctly on the screen. A The display color depth is likely set to 256 colors. Increase this to 16 bit (65536 Colors) or higher. To access the Windows Display Settings, click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, double- click the Display icon, click on the Settings tab. Q I have created a custom toolbar but I cannot rename the toolbar. A Click on View, Toolbars. Click once on the new toolbar in the list. It should be named "Toolbar X" where "X" is a number value. Press F2 on the keyboard and type the new name. Q When I try to click on click on File, Print Merge, the command is not there. A Click on Tools, Options, Workspace, Customize, Menus. On the Commands list, click on File & Layout, File and select "Print &Merge". On the Menu list, make sure that "&File" is selected. Click the Add button to add the Print Merge command to this File Menu. Import / Export Q When I try to import 3DMF files into CorelDREAM 3D 8 from CD-ROM #3, nothing comes in. How do I import these into CorelDREAM 3D 8? A Copy the desired 3DMF file from CD-ROM #3 into a folder on your hard drive and import the file. Q I imported a 3DMF file into my CorelDRAW 8 document and saved the file. When I reopen the CDR file and double-click on the 3DMF object, it disappears. A When importing 3DMF files into CorelDRAW, first copy the desired 3DMF file from CD- ROM #3 into a folder on the hard drive and then import it. You should now be able to edit the 3DMF file after saving and reopening the file. Q When I try to import a D3D file from CD-ROM #3, I get multiple pages of text. A D3D files can not be imported into CorelDRAW 8. You must first import the file into CorelDREAM 3D 8 and export it to the 3DMF format, which can then be imported into CorelDRAW 8. Miscellaneous: Q I can't find my registration card, how can I find my serial number? A Look through all of the documentation that came with the package carefully. There should be a red and white registration card included with the software. The serial number is printed twice on this card; once on the half you mail in, and once on the other half that you keep as your proof of purchase. Contact Customer Service if this number cannot be located. Q I find that CorelDRAW 8 is slower than CorelDRAW 7. A To speed up CorelDRAW 8, first ensure that the system meets the minimum requirements: Pentium® 90 Processor, 16 MB RAM, Windows® 95 or Windows NT 4.0. In CorelDRAW, click Tools, Options, Workspace, Memory, ensure that the Primary Swap Disk is set to the drive with the most available free space. Set the Memory Usage to at least 50%. Click OK, shut down CorelDRAW and restart the application. Q When I click on Tools, Options, or Layout, Page Setup, an Invalid Page Fault occurs. A This error is related to the color of the 3D Objects in the Windows Display Appearance settings. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, double-click Display, click on the Appearance tab. In the Item list, select 3D Objects at the top. Change its color to one of the Windows Basic colors. This issue was addressed in the DR8RevB.exe updated available on the Corel FTP site. Q Under Tools, Options, Memory, I am trying to specify my removable hard drive as an additional Swap Disks. It does not appear in my list of available drives to choose. A Under both Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, CorelDRAW 8 does not support removable drives as additional swap disks. Q In PHOTO-PAINT™ 8 when I want click on the Effects menu, and try to select a Plugin in the list, the options are grayed out. A Most plug-in effects require that the image be a 24 bit RGB image. Convert the image to 24- bit by clicking on Image, Convert To, RGB Color (24 bit). Q In PHOTO-PAINT 8, I can't find the x and y position of my mouse cursor anymore in the status bar. A This information was moved to a Roll-Up. Click on View, Roll-Ups, Info or press Ctrl+F1. Q In CorelDREAM 3D, when I click on Help, Contents, and try to open the CorelDREAM 3D Tutorial I get a message that says "An error exists in this Help file. Contact your application vendor for an updated Help file (1024)." A Open up the Windows Explorer, look in the \Corel\Graphics8\Programs folder and double- click on DREAMTUT.EXE. Q An Invalid Page Fault occurs when I use a custom Black or White Outline button on Toolbox. A To change the color of an outline to black or white, select the object and right-click on the desired color in the color palette. This issue was addressed in the DR8RevB.exe updated available on the Corel FTP site. Q I have a file where I have used drop shadows. When I open the file, some of the drop shadows disappear. A In certain situations, drop shadows may be lost in a document when the file is re-opened. This may occur when drop shadows are used on multi-page documents. This issue was addressed in the DR8RevB.exe updated available on the Corel FTP site. Q After installing CorelDRAW with PHOTO-PAINT, my bitmap files have become PHOTO-PAINT 8 files. A The files have not been converted to PHOTO-PAINT files, they are simply associated with PHOTO-PAINT so that when you double-click on the file in Windows Explorer, PHOTO-PAINT will attempt to open them for editing. To remove the association, click on Tools, Options, Global, Filters, Associate. Scroll down the list and uncheck the file types that you do not wish to be associated with PHOTO-PAINT. You can now reassociate the file type with the other application. Q I am trying to use Corel CAPTURE™ and I keep getting a "Capture has been interrupted" message. A Locate the CAPTURE.INI file in the \Corel\Graphics8\Config folder and rename it. Launch Corel CAPTURE and it will create a new configuration file.
