#3461- Corel Color Profile WizardTM 8 The following documentation will outline the steps required to configure the Corel Color Profile WizardTM 8. The Corel Color Profile Wizard 8 is an application that works with the CorelDRAWTM 8 graphics suite to ensure that color is consistent across the different devices on the system. Once the devices have been configured, a mathematical table can be calculated to compensate for the individual color characteristics of the device. The result is that all of the devices will produce, display and print the same colors. Because monitors use the RGB (red, green, blue) color model and printers use a CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) color model to produce the image, a color conversion must take place. This is NOT an exact science, therefore, even if all devices are configured within the Corel Color Manager there can be minor color shifting. To have the Color Profile Wizard modify the on-screen images to approximate the output of the printer in PHOTO-PAINTTM 8 or CorelDRAW 8, click on Tools, Options, Global, Color Management and select Calibrate Colors for display. (Note that the display is based on the currently selected profiles and will change when a profile is changed) Creating a Color Profile A color profile is driver specific. In other words, if the printer driver is updated, the profile will need to be rebuilt or tuned. The first step is to launch the Color Profile Wizard. It can be accessed from within CorelDRAW 8 and Corel PHOTO-PAINT 8 by clicking on Tools, Options, Global, Color Management, Profiles and select the Color Profile Wizard button. It can also be accessed directly by clicking on Start, Programs, CorelDRAW 8, Graphics Utilities and Color Profile Wizard 8. If it is not part of this list it is most likely due to the type of installation performed. To install the Corel Color Profile Wizard, run the Setup again and select a Custom installation, and then place check marks beside the desired applications or utilities. The Corel Color Profile Wizard 8 is located in the Graphic Utilities group. The initial screen of the Color Profile Wizard has two fields to choose from. The first field displays the currently selected device. A device can either be a monitor, scanner, composite printer, or a separations printer. The second field indicates the selected color profile for the device. Corel provides a number of color profiles for various devices on CD #1. If the device is not listed or the color profile does not seem to be accurate with the system then the profile can be tuned. The Color Profile Wizard also supports a third party calibration device known as a Colortron IITM which offers an even greater level of precision when calibrating the system. Tuning or Configuring The Monitor Before configuring the monitor, it is recommended that the monitor be left on for at least one hour. This will ensure the electron guns are at a stable temperature, and stabilize color output which varies depending on how warm the guns are. If the monitor has manual adjustment controls, ensure they have been set to the manufacturer's recommended settings. Adjust the monitor's brightness to match the lighting in the room (ambient lighting). Remember that the brighter the ambient lighting, the smaller the range of colors the monitor can produce (gamut). Calibrating a monitor for transmissive originals like transparencies and slides requires a target in the medium for which it is being calibrated. In the Device field Select Monitor If the monitor is in the drop down Profile list, highlight it by clicking on it once. This will provide the Color Manager with a supplied color profile that was built specifically for the selected monitor. If there are only Three (3) options in the profile drop down list to choose from, expand the selection by installing additional profiles with the setup program or select the option to install profiles. The three options to select a profile are: Generic Profile This will provide a non-specific device color profile. Get Profile from disk... This allows a color profile provided by a third party to be selected. This color profile must have an ICM extension and it must conform to ICC (International color consortium ) standards. Install profiles... This will allow any profile that is supplied by Corel for the type of device selected. When selecting this option make sure that CD # 1 of CorelDRAW 8 in the CD-ROM drive If a desired profile cannot be found that matches the device or the color profile selected yields unsatisfactory results, then choose to tune a profile. To tune a profile select the tune button. Tune will generate or edit an existing profile . This will allow the device to be configured manually. Enter a Manufacturer name and Model of the monitor. To prevent editing an existing supplied color profile, change the Manufacturer name and model. Click on Next. There is an option to create a color profile for the monitor using a Colortron II, a color calibration device. If a Colortron II is not available select NEXT. Within this window, there are Two methods of calibrating the monitor. Adjusting the Chromaticity or Monitor White Point (these directly effect one another) and it can also be calibrated manually or "visually". Note: Chromaticity or Monitor White Point - the values for the chromaticity should be supplied in the manufacturers documentation. By adjusting the values and clicking on the preview button, the image in the upper left corner will reflect the changes. Adjusting the white point (5000 Kelvin is the "standard illuminant ") it will then change the Chromaticity values but this won't be apparent unless re-calibration is necessary. Gamma - The Gamma value for the monitor should be supplied in the manufacturer's documentation. If this is not available, contact the manufacturer for these values. Manual or Visual Calibrating Chromaticity or monitor white point and Gamma allows the monitor to be calibrated manually. Leave the monitor on for 1 hour, and then adjust the brightness/contrast controls to normal operating values. Make sure the ambient lighting in the room matches the normal working environment. Now perform the same steps as above until Color Manager Window containing the sample image is displayed. Adjust the White Point of the monitor to the Standard Illuminant of 5000 degrees Kelvin (important to be precise). Now adjust the Gamma values for Red, Blue, and Green. The best way to do this is to select Red, for example, and stand far enough away from the monitor that the horizontal stripes in the comparison patch on the left cannot be seen. Adjust the Red value until the two patches appear to match. Repeat these steps for Green and Blue. This also takes care of the Chromaticity adjustment. Calibrate With Device check box allows a third party device (ie: Colortron II ) to be selected and the COM port used for the device. By clicking on Next, a target area will appear on the screen showing where to attach the colorimeter to the screen with its suction cups. From there its automatic, it will produce a color profile for the monitor. Configuring The Scanner In the Device field, select scanner. If the scanner is in the drop down Profile list, highlight it by clicking on it once. This will provide the Color Manager with a supplied color profile that was built specifically for the scanner selected. If there are only four (4) options in the list to choose from, expand the selection by installing additional profiles with the setup program. Other options available for selecting a scanner color profile are: Generic Profile.: This provides a non-specific device color profile. None.: Select this option when a scanner is not being used. Get Profile from disk.: This will allow a third party color profile to be installed. This color profile must have an ICM extension and it must conform to ICC (International color consortium) standards. Install profiles.: This will allow the installation of any profile that is supplied by Corel for the type of device selected. When this option is selected, make sure that CD # 1 of CorelDRAW 8 is in the CD-ROM drive If a desired profile cannot be found that matches the device or the color profile selected yields unsatisfactory results, then choose to tune a profile. To tune a profile select the tune button. Tune.: Creates or tunes a profile. Enter the Manufacturer and Model of the device. Clicking on NEXT will bring up a window asking which method is going to be used. If this step has already been performed and the scanned target was saved, select Retrieve Target from File to get the saved file, other wise select scan target. Note: the previously scanned image must have been scanned on the system being used and with scanner being calibrated, not from another system or scanner. The target image and corresponding reference file that ship with each box of CorelDRAW 8 are mass produced. For that reason, it is not possible to provide a customized target/REF file combination within the tolerances required by some systems. The solution is to make such a product available, and that's why Corel offers the Kodak target and target definition file set to correct calibration problems. For more information, connect to the internet and click on the www.corel.com button on this dialog box. Scan Target.: A target image is supplied with CorelDRAW 8, but advanced or professional users should consider using a third-party (ie: Kodak and AGFA) IT8 target. Ensure the reference file is included with the target. This type of color correction tool is also recommended when comparing the Calibrated vs. the Uncalibrated image, and finding that the calibrated image is tinted blue or pink. Once the target is scanned select the appropriate option based on whether this is the target supplied by Corel or a third party IT8 target. This will tell the Color Manager to compare the scanned image with the included reference file or prompt for the third party manufacturer's reference file. The preview window lines up the scanned file with the reference file so that it can compare the values generated by the scanned image and the corresponding values in the reference file accurately. Ensure that the image is right side up. If not, use the rotation buttons to adjust the image's rotation. Use the zoom tool to magnify each corner and then match the cursor to the fiduciary marks in each corner. Only the top-left, top-right, and bottom-right marks need to be lined up. Click next to continue. Once the preview image is generated, the tonal characteristics of the final image can be adjusted by clicking on Use Preset Tonal Settings and manipulating the tonal response of the color manager. Select the Darken Shadows check box if the scanned colors are correct, but appear to be too light in the grayscale bar at the bottom of the target image. To view both the original and the corrected image side-by-side, click the Preview button. Configuring A Composite Printer A composite printer prints the image as it appears on the monitor. It contains a combination of all the color channels in the image. Select composite printer in the device list. If the composite printer is in the drop down Profile list, highlight it by clicking on it once. This will provide the Color Manager with a supplied color profile that was built specifically for the selected printer. If there are only four (4) options in the list to choose from, this is a result of the type of installation performed. The four (4) options are: Generic CMYK printer Profile - This will provide a non-specific device color profile. None - This will remove any color calibration when printing to a composite printer. Get Profile from disk - This will allow the use of a color profile provided by a third party. This color profile must have an ICM extension and it must conform to ICC (International color consortium) standards. Install profiles - This allows the installation of any profile that is supplied by Corel for the type of device selected. If this option is selected make sure that CD # 1 of CorelDRAW 8 is in the CD- ROM drive If a desired profile cannot be found that matches the device or the color profile selected yields unsatisfactory results, then choose to tune a profile. To tune a profile select the tune button. Tune a profile ... Enter the manufacturer name and model of the printer. To get to a new line in the description field, hold the CTRL key down and hit ENTER. The next window will ask if this is a three/four or four ink printer. When in doubt, check the printer documentation or contact the manufacturer. Most inkjet style non-postscript printers are considered "3 and 4 ink printers." Click Next. Select the Printer type (ie: Laser Writer, Ink Jet, etc.) and click Next. If the test pattern has been previously printed from this system to the specified device, select the option to not print the test pattern. Otherwise, select Yes and click next. In Print Setup, select the printer and click OK to continue. Select File Method if a third party device (ie: Colorimeter) is going to be used to generate a color profile. The printer must print a test pattern page. The accuracy of the final calibration is directly correlated to the number of patches (60-200) in the test pattern page. If the page has already been printed from the printer, select No, Do not Print Test Pattern File. It is worthy to note that the type of paper and ink used will effect the results. It is recommended to use the printer manufacturers' ink cartridge. Color rendition on higher quality paper will provide a more accurate color representation. Some companies actually make paper specific for their printers. The next window again has two options Load from File and Measure and Save To a File. Load from File is used when this step has already been performed and previously saved RGB Measurement file (*.RMF) is going to be used. Otherwise, select Measure And Save To a File. From the drop down list select the type of calibration device being used along with the COM port it is connected to. Regardless of the device selected, it should be calibrated by clicking on the Calibrate button. This particular is process will be different for each device. Finally, the next window contains a test pattern. Highlight the color on screen and with the third party device calibrate the color that corresponds to a color on the printed test pattern page. Note: In CorelDRAW 8 there is no "Scanner Method" of calibrating a printer, as there was in previous versions of CorelDRAW. Configuring A Separations Printer Separations break down the image into component colors (plates), that corresponds to the ink colors in the printer. The steps to generate a color profile are virtually identical to the section above (Configuring A Composite Printer).
