#3464- Error Messages Saving or Opening Files Ensure the most current version of CorelDRAW™ 8 is installed. Contact Customer Service to obtain any updates. If the following message "Error Writing X:\FILENAME" occurs when attempting to save a file, try one or more of the following: Do not close the opened file at any point during a save operation. A. Export the file as a Corel Presentation Exchange 6/7 (CMX). 1. Click File, Export. 2. For Save as Type, select Corel Presentation Exchange 6/7 (CMX). Note the location of where the file is exported under Save In and the Name of the file. Disable the Export this Page Only check box if the file contains multiple pages. 3. Create a new document. Click File, New. 4. Import the CMX file created in step 2. Click File, Import. 5. Click File, Save As. Enter a new name for the file and click the Save button. Note: This method is recommended if there is difficulty saving or opening a document created in a previous version of CorelDRAW. B. Load the CORELDRW.CDT File 1. Click on Layout, Graphic and Text Styles. 2. In the Dockers window, locate and click the small, top, right-hand arrow button. Select Template and choose Load. 3. Load the CORELDRW.CDT file from C:\COREL\GRAPHICS8\DRAW. Note: folder location may vary, default folder name is given. 4. Click File, Save As. Enter a new name for the file and click the Save button. C. Determine if there is an offending or corrupted object in the document 1. Select an object in the document with the pick tool. 2. Click Edit, Copy. 3. Click File, New. 4. Click Edit, Paste. 5. Click File, Save As. Enter a new name and click the Save button. 6. Repeat the process until a certain object(s) after being pasted create an error message when saving. Remove that object in the original document. Error Messages when Opening a Previously Saved Document "CorelDRAW has caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module CORELDRW.EXE" "This file contains an Invalid Bitmap" or "This file contains an Invalid Object" Perform the following steps: 1. Ensure this is adequate free disk space on the hard drive. Double-click My Computer. Select the drive where Windows® 95 or Windows® NT 4.0 is installed and click File, Properties. Ensure that free space is at least 100 MB. When working with very large files, more free disk space is necessary. 2. Remove any temporary files from the computer. Close all applications and Start, Find, Files or Folders. Type *.TMP and click Find Now. After the search is complete, click Edit, Select All. Press DELETE on the keyboard. 3. Perform a SCANDISK of the hard drive. In Windows 95, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Scandisk.. Enable Thorough Test and Automatically Fix Errors. In Windows NT 4.0, using my Computer or Windows® NT Explorer, click the hard drive to check. Click on the File menu, click Properties. Select the Tools Tab. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. In the Check Disk dialog box, enable Automatically Fix Filesystem errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Click Start. 4. Look for a back up of the file being opened. Click on Start, Find, Files or Folders. Type in *.CDR and Look in the hard disk. There may be a file named BACKUP_OF_FILENAME.CDR or AUTOBACKUP_OF_FILENAME.CDR where FILENAME.CDR is the name of the corrupted file. Attempt to open the backup and save it using a different name. 5. Defragment the hard drive. In Windows 95, click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter. Proceed, even if the message states it is not required. In Windows NT 4.0, a Disk Defragmenter Tool must be installed. Refer to the Windows on-line help or manual for further documentation. Attempt to Recover a Corrupted File using Corel MEDIA FOLDERS™ If the above measures have failed to open a corrupted file, try using Corel MEDIA FOLDERS to convert the file: 1. Launch the Windows Explorer - click Start Programs, Windows Explorer or Windows NT Explorer. 2. Select the hard disk and create a new folder. Click File, New, Folder. 3. Right click the new folder and select Convert to Corel Media Folder. (If this is not an option, first run a custom installation of CorelDRAW 8 and under Graphic Utilities enable Corel MEDIA FOLDERS) 4. Restart Windows. 5. Copy the corrupted file into the Corel Media Folder. 6. Right-click the file and select Convert To. For Save as Type, select Corel Presentation Exchange 6/7 (CMX). Click the Convert button. 7. Import the .CMX file into a new document in CorelDRAW and save the file.
