Corel Ventura Width Tables - #4208 When Corel VENTURA first loads, it attempts to build an ENVIRON.WID file. This file is a width table which represents the metrics of installed fonts as seen by the default printer driver. Building this file can take a few seconds or a number of minutes depending on how many fonts are installed on the system. Once the ENVIRON.WID is created, it is stored on the hard drive for future reference. The width table is entirely independent of the fonts. The presence of a font name within the width table does not guarantee the correct display or printout of a font. For this, the font must be installed on the computer or be a resident font in the default printer. If your system freezes when loading Corel VENTURA it may be related to the width table. As a general rule, a width table is limited to approximately 300 fonts. This 300 font limit is only a guideline as it is possible to have more or less than 300 fonts listed, depending on the particular font characteristics found during the creation of the width table. As mentioned previously, Corel VENTURA may take a number of minutes to build the width table if there are numerous fonts installed on the system. If your system seems to freeze or hesitate at the Opening Screen Device message during the loading process, do not interrupt the computer. Corel VENTURA will eventually load if left to continue the process. If Corel VENTURA seems to hesitate for an unusual amount of time before completely loading, allow the program to continue and load completely, then count the number of fonts, including styles such as NORMAL, ITALIC, BOLD, etc., are installed on your system. If this number is near or exceeds the limit of 300 you should reduce the number of fonts on the system. Refer to your MS Windows User Guide for instructions regarding removing True Type fonts or to your Adobe Type Manager User Guide for removing Type 1 fonts. Creating A Custom Width Table Each time Corel VENTURA loads, a default stylesheet or the last stylesheet in use when Corel VENTURA was last open will automatically load. Likewise, the associated width table will load since the name of the width table will have been saved within the stylesheet information. When Corel VENTURA loads a stylesheet referencing the ENVIRON.WID, you may be prompted to rebuild the environment width table if the font information of your system has changed since the last build. Reasons for a change in your system's font information can include: * Font(s) have been added or removed from your system. * A new printer driver is now the default printer. When prompted to rebuild the environment width table you may choose not to do so which will allow Corel VENTURA to load without further delay. The actual status of the fonts on your system will not match the contents of the ENVIRON.WID until the ENVIRON.WID is allowed to rebuild itself. The width table may be rebuilt at any time. For further instruction refer to the Corel VENTURA Reference Manual, page 5-17. The ENVIRON.WID width table will not prompt to be rebuilt when a stylesheet associated with a custom width table is loaded at startup. If the default stylesheet is associated with a custom width table i.e. COREL.WID, the load time of Corel VENTURA can be noticeably shorter as custom width tables will not prompt to be rebuilt even when the status of the fonts change. To create a custom width table refer to your Corel VENTURA Reference Manual on page 5-20. A custom width table will base its font information on the metrics of the installed fonts as seen by the default printer in use at the time of generation. The information stored in the new width table will not be applicable for other printers, as a result, a custom width table should only be used with the printer driver that it was originally generated with. If another printer is used, the ENVIRON.WID width table should be used, rebuilt if necessary, and if need be, renamed for use with that printer. Modifying A Width Table Width tables must be modified from within Corel VENTURA, since modifying the *.WID files by any other means will render them inoperable. The modifications for width tables available include: * Renaming the width table in order to create a new one. * Add fonts from one width table to another. * Remove fonts from existing width tables. To modify a width table by adding or removing fonts, refer to your Corel VENTURA Reference Manual on pages 5-18 through 5-20. Sending Files To Service Bureaus When sending your files to a service bureau, you will need to create a width table that corresponds to the printer the service bureau will be using for output of your final document. You will need the following information: * The name and model of their printer/image setter i.e.: Lino 330, Agfa 9000 Series PS. * The printer driver. This will help to determine if the driver you are using will correspond to theirs. * What fonts are resident in the printer that the service bureau is using. Please contact your service bureau for this and any additional information they deem necessary. Before creating the width table, install the printer driver used by the service bureau and assign it as the default printer. The driver can be installed through the Windows Control Panel. MS Windows includes a number of printer drivers, including those for high resolution output devices such as Linotronic 300, 330, Agfa 9000 Series PS, etc. If you know which driver you need to install refer to your MS Windows User Guide for instructions on installing the driver through the Control Panel. Use the most recent version of the printer driver, if necessary, contact either the printer manufacturer or Microsoft to request the most recent driver. Corel does not provide printer drivers. Once the printer driver is installed and properly setup through the Windows Control Panel, create a custom width table to be associated with the new printer driver. To do this, refer to page 5-20 in your Corel VENTURA Reference Manual under the heading Creating a custom width table. If you are using printer resident font(s) in your file, you will need to know which fonts are resident in the printer used at the service bureau. Otherwise, you may force the equivalent soft font(s) to be sent to the printer. This option is found in the printer driver dialog box. Consult with your service bureau to determine the preferred method. Using VENTURA GEM files Chapters and stylesheets from Xerox VENTURA Publisher (GEM) may refer to other width tables such as OUTPUT.WID or a renamed width table specific to the selected printer. When the width table in use references fonts that are not actually available through MS Windows, the printed output may not reflect the display on the screen. Using ENVIRON.WID will cause the width table to reflect the actual fonts installed and usable on the system. The ENVIRON.WID width table may be renamed as described earlier. Additional information on width tables and their usage may be found beginning on page 5-15 of your Corel VENTURA Reference Manual. Copyright © 1996 Corel Corporation. Last Updated: 29 May, 1996
