# 5503- Publications and Chapters Most programs work with few files at one time, for example, when importing a piece of clipart into a CorelDRAW file, that piece of clipart becomes part of the active drawing. In contrast, a single document in Corel VENTURA 5 can contain up to a maximum of 128 text and graphics files combined. Instead of integrating the files into one large file, Corel VENTURA records where the files are stored, by maintaining a list of pointers in a chapter file (*.CHP). These pointers tell Corel VENTURA where to find the associated text and graphics files and how to position them in the formatted document. These pointers also tell the program which stylesheet (*.STY) to use and where to find it. Keeping the text and graphics files separate allows other documents to share the same text and graphics. It also allows you to edit these files in other programs. Any changes made are reflected in the Corel VENTURA 5 document the next time you open it. Documents created in Corel VENTURA 5 can be divided into sections called Chapters, which are linked through a Publication file (*.PUB). Just as Chapters link the text and graphics files in a document, a Publication links the Chapters making it possible to manage each document as an individual unit. Some of the operations you can perform on a publication file include: Generating a Table of Contents and an Index that spans all of the Chapters. Copying individual Chapters or the entire Publication to another location on hard disk or other media. Renumbering pages, tables and figures for the entire Publication. Updating cross-references for the entire Publication. File Management Since the file pointer method links Publication component files, click File, Publication Manager when you want to move or copy Publications and their associated Chapters from one drive or directory location to another. This will ensure all pointers are correctly updated in the Publication and Chapter files. Do not use any other move or copy commands with Publications or Chapters. For information about managing documents, refer page 315 of the Corel VENTURA 5 manual (Vol. 2). Refer, also to the online Help, for information about the CVPFIX utility. This utility will update Publication and Chapter file pointers, if DOS or Windows was used to move or copy the files. A single Chapter can contain a total of 128 files (text and/or graphics), and a maximum of 9999 pages. A stylesheet can contain a maximum of 128 tags including those generated by Corel VENTURA 5. Stylesheets - Their Role in Document Creation Every chapter in Corel VENTURA 5 requires a stylesheet. A stylesheet is a file, specific to Corel VENTURA 5, which controls the typographic format of your documents. It is stored separately from the text in your documents. You can create your own stylesheets or you can use the numerous stylesheets which are supplied with Corel VENTURA 5. These stylesheets can be easily incorporated into your chapters and redesigned according to your needs. Assuming that the default installation directory was chosen, you will find these stylesheets in the directory, \COREL50\VENTURA\TYPESET. When you design a stylesheet, you give each set of typographic attributes a name. Each name is called a Tag. You may assign attributes from the stylesheet to each paragraph in the document by selecting a paragraph, and selecting the appropriate tag from the Tag List on the Text ribbon bar or from the Tags RollUp. Stylesheets define the following properties: All settings defined from the Layout menu, which include parameters such as master base frame properties. i.e. margins, columns, gutters and page setup. All settings defined from the Format menu which, as mentioned above, include such items as typographic attributes associated with tags. i.e. typefaces, spacing, alignment, ruling lines, etc. You will find more information on stylesheets and tags on page 3 of the Corel VENTURA 5 manual (Vol. 2). Corel VENTURA's New Publication Concept Previous versions of Corel VENTURA Publisher were designed around the concept of chapters. When multiple chapters were associated together, they were linked by a publication file. In the past, chapters could be opened independent of the publication. Corel VENTURA 5 uses a different approach to document organization. Users must open chapters using the parent publication file. If you have used a previous version of VENTURA, you will notice that the user interface has been developed around the publication concept. As a result, in the File menu, the Open, Save and Save As commands all refer to PUB files. When you create a new publication that contains only one chapter, there is no additional work, the chapter is automatically saved with the same default name as the PUB file, unless Verbose Save has been enabled. You can add new or existing chapters, including those from previous versions. The new Publication Manager has many facilities for archiving, deleting, and managing PUB files and their contents. Opening Chapters from Previous Versions (3.x and 4.x) Chapters from earlier versions of Corel VENTURA do not have to belong to a publication. To open a 3.x or 4.x chapter, click File, Open, and click 3.x and 4.x Chapters (*.CHP) from the List Files of Type list box.
