# 5512- Creating PDF Files Corel VENTURA 5 can interact with Adobe Acrobat products to produce hypertext links. Adobe Acrobat utilities read encapsulated PostScript files to determine the content of the document to be processed. To create hypertext links special links must be placed by the application into the encapsulated file. Not all applications have this ability. Corel VENTURA uses native codes to produce these links. For example table of contents, indexes, and cross-references all generate codes necessary for Adobe Acrobat to interpret and convert into hypertext links. Note: Adobe Acrobat Reader version 1.0 is included with Corel VENTURA, other components such as the Adobe Acrobat Distiller, and Adobe Acrobat Exchange are not included with the Corel VENTURA package. 1. Setup the table of contents (TOC), indices, and cross references etc. 2. Renumber the publication. 3. Generate the TOC, and indices twice in this order. 4. In the Print Dialog box, click Print to File. 5. Click Print, Setup, PostScript Options, and click the encapsulated PostScript driver. 6. Click Print, Options, Options, and click Acrobat. Note: Ensure that you are printing to a PostScript printer driver. Once the document has been sent to an encapsulated file, that file can be sent through the Adobe Acrobat Distiller utility. This will format a PDF file. That file can be read by Adobe Acrobat Reader, and will display with hypertext links. Hidden text that is inserted in Corel VENTURA will be displayed as notes in the PDF format. Hidden Text Code Hidden text must be inserted using a word processor. The hidden text codes are as follows: <$!~text> will create hidden text within Corel VENTURA but will suppress the hidden code from being read by the Adobe Acrobat system. A ~ (tilde) will prevent hidden text codes from being interpreted by Adobe Acrobat. <$!text> will create hidden text within Corel VENTURA and will enable hidden notes within Adobe Acrobat Z. Note: Hidden text will not convert correctly to an Adobe Acrobat note if it is the first entry in a paragraph. Therefore, you must insert a space before you insert the hidden text code. To add notes to the PDF file, perform the following steps: 1. Using a word processor insert the hidden text code. 2. If you have indices, TOC or references, renumber the publication. 3. Generate the TOC, and indices twice in this order. 4. In the Print Dialog box, click Print to File. 5. Click Print, Setup, PostScript Options, and click the encapsulated PostScript driver. 6. Click Print, Options, Options, and click Acrobat, and Acrobat Notes. A less powerful alternative to Adobe Acrobat Distiller is the PDF Writer provided by Adobe. The PDF Writer is installed automatically with Adobe Acrobat Exchange. This PDF Writer will also create hypertext links but is lacking some of the powerful features of Acrobat Distiller. To use the PDF Writer, perform the following steps: 1. Setup the table of contents (TOC), indices, and cross references etc. 2. Renumber the publication. 3. Generate the TOC, and indices twice in this order. 4. Click Print, Setup, PostScript Options, and click PDF Writer. 6. Click Print, Options, Options, and click Acrobat. Note: If the PDF file displays a large black rectangle you are probably experiencing conflicts between Corel VENTURA and Adobe Acrobat Distiller. Copy VP_PATCH.PS which can be found on CompuServe into the Acrobat distiller startup directory, i.e. X:\ACRODIST\STARTUP. Where X:\ is the drive letter where Adobe Acrobat is installed.
