The following should be considered when converting previous version publications to Corel VENTURA™ 7. Text Flow and Alignment Decimal Alignment: In previous version chapters and publications, some decimal aligned paragraphs extended beyond the margins. Corel VENTURA 7 respects frame margins to within one micron, therefore, text formatted with decimal aligned tab settings that exceed the margin settings will wrap to the next line. To restore the document to its original appearance, adjust the tab position so that text fits within the margins. Line Endings in 1200 DPI versus Microns: Corel VENTURA 7 uses the most current text processing technologies. Updated hyphenators, precision to one micron, and more accurate font information may change line endings and hyphenation points in previous version publications. Corel VENTURA 7 respects the right margin: Previous versions of Corel VENTURA did not always respect the right margin when using tabs, and tracking. Since Corel VENTURA 7 respects those margins, text breaking, text extending, and additional pages added to the publication to accommodate the new text flow by be experienced when opening the previous version publications. Corel VENTURA 7 respects tab settings: In previous versions of Corel VENTURA, a center aligned tab could overlap text of a tab set left. Corel VENTURA 7 will not allow the text to overlap, instead, the text will appear left aligned to the previous tab setting. Vertical Justification is now ON: Previous versions would sometimes ignore vertical justification settings. This has been corrected in Corel VENTURA 7. Above and Below Frames: Frames in Corel VENTURA 5 publications and chapters often changed the way above and below spacing worked. In Corel VENTURA 7 the above and below paragraph spacing always respects the frame. Precision differences: Precision increments in Corel VENTURA 7 allow users to see more decimal places for point settings than previous versions. For example, shifting up by 10 points in a previous version actually shifted the text by 10.04 points. Similar precision enhancements will appear in the tracking and kerning dialog boxes. Note, that the increase in precision may cause text to not fit in frames. A red X will be displayed alerting users to this problem. FILTERS MultiMate file format is not supported: MultiMate files are not supported in Corel VENTURA 5 or 7. When importing older publications that contain MultiMate files, the text files will not appear in either version 5 or 7. To open the publication in Corel VENTURA 7, open the publication or chapter in Corel VENTURA 3.x or 4.x and click File, Type Rename to change the format to a format supported in Corel VENTURA 7 such as WordPerfect or ASCII. Make sure the publication is saved before attempting to open the publication in Corel VENTURA 7. AutoCad .SLD format no longer supported: Since the SLD file format is no longer supported .SLD files will not appear in the converted publications. Use .EPS, .DXF, or HPGL output from AutoCad to create files that you can import into Corel VENTURA publications. HEADERS AND FOOTERS Header and Footer workarounds: Corel VENTURA 7 assumes header and footer paragraphs to be present when a header or footer is enabled. Previous version users may notice slight differences in the way that headers and footers frames function in Corel VENTURA 7. These differences are necessary to accommodate the enhanced header and footer functions in Corel VENTURA 7. Some common differences are listed below. - When ruling lines were applied to Z_Header or Z_Footer tags in previous versions, the ruling line would not display if header or footer text was not available. Corel VENTURA 7 always displays these ruling lines even if no text exists in the header or footer. To prevent the ruling line from being displayed in this case, disable the header or footer on that page. - Previous versions would not display headers or footers if the header or footer tag settings were invalid for the header or footer frame. If header or footer text does not fit the frame in Corel VENTURA 7, a red X appears in the frame. As mentioned above, an X appears even if no alpha numeric text appears in the header or footer. If the no text is to appear in the header or footer, disable the header or footer for that page. If the text needs to be adjusted to fit the frame, change the Z_Header or Z_Footer tag properties. - First Match now displays from the beginning of the chapter. If you do not want a header or footer to display until a certain point in the publication, turn it off for individual pages. TABLES Tables and baselines: Previous versions calculated the baseline below tables from the upper edge of the table border. Corel VENTURA 7 measures the baseline below tables from the bottom edge of the table border. This difference may change the position of text below some tables. Text in narrow table cells: Previous versions allowed text to extend slightly over the allowable space in a table cell. Corel VENTURA 7 does not allow this and therefore text may wrap differently in table cells. If you have very narrow table cells, you may need to adjust the text tag properties to allow the text to fit. A red X indicates that a cell, table, or frame contain text with invalid formatting. To remove the X, change the properties of the affected text. Unused tabs in tables: Corel VENTURA 7 respects tabs in tables and in justified text. If a previous version table contains an unused tab in a table, the table may grow in Corel VENTURA 7. Space above tables: In previous versions of Corel VENTURA space above tables was not considered unless a paragraph or a frame was above a table. The spacing was sometimes unpredictable depending on the location of the frame. Corel VENTURA 7 always includes the space above a table, which may make some of your publications look like there is more space between the table and the frames. Length of time required to load older version chapters and publications: Corel VENTURA 7 includes a wizard to help convert your previous version publications and chapters. Using the wizard can reduce the time it takes to convert older publications to the new format. The wizard includes a setting for making pictures internal. Ensure that you choose a suitable setting since making pictures internal increases the time it takes to convert publications. Columns too narrow for tag settings: Previous versions did not respect tag settings in situations where a table or frame column was narrower than the In From Right decimal alignment setting on the tag. If this occurred, the text still appeared. Since Corel VENTURA 7 adheres to those settings, some table text may not appear. To make the text appear, make the table larger, make the columns wider, or make the margins larger if the column is on the base page. PUBLICATION STRUCTURE Files in different directories with same name in publication: Since previous versions held the path in the chapter file, it was possible to have several files with the same name, that were located in different directories. Corel VENTURA saves only the file name, not the complete path. To avoid confusion, the duplicate file names will have a number appended to the name. Note: Refer to Fax on Demand document #5600 for more information about the new file structure. FONTS Fonts & PANOSE: In the event that PANOSE Font Matching substitutes fonts in the document, view the original font code for the missing fonts in Copy Editor. PANOSE Font Matching does not change any font information in the document it only provides a substitution for that working session. Use the Corel VENTURA 7 Find and Replace feature to change font codes. FRAMES Auto-wrapped frames from Corel VENTURA 5 change text flow: The default setting for autowrapped pictures in Corel VENTURA 5 was to flow text down the left of the picture then down the right of the picture. In Corel VENTURA 7, these items will open with text flowing across the wrapped object so that the text can be read in a left to right fashion. To reset the text flow to the Corel VENTURA 5 style, right-click the wrapped object and set the text flow properties to Left Then Right. Fills and Ruling Lines: In previous version publications, ruling lines around frames cut the fill off at the inside edge of the ruling lines. However, text would go under the ruling lines and was visible between the line and the frame edge if there were no margins. In Corel VENTURA 7 text and fills are treated the same. You may see a color between two ruling lines or on the outside of the ruling lines if there was space between the ruling line and the frame edge. Vertical Ruling Lines in Frames: In previous versions of Corel VENTURA a vertical ruling line in a frame respected the top and bottom margins. In Corel VENTURA 7 a vertical ruling line is the height of the frame. Frames interrupting the flow of other frames: Previous versions allowed you to slightly overlap frames containing text without interrupting the text flow. In Corel VENTURA 7, frames that overlap slightly may interrupt text flow. To correct this, click Snap To Grid (or Guidelines, or Columns) to snap frames into the correct position without overlapping. INDEXES Index entries and generated tags: Previous versions generated Z_INDEX MAIN and Z_INDEX SUB tags and applied them to long paragraphs of index entries in generated files. To provide greater flexibility for index tags and multiple levels indexes, Corel VENTURA 7 tags index text as Z_INDEX LVL followed by the number of the index level being tagged, e.g., Z_INDEX_LVL 2. Modify generated tags using the Tag Properties dialog box. TIPS File Pointers with Corel VENTURA 4.2, and 4.x: Before converting a Corel VENTURA 4.x chapter or publication run the FIXCHP.EXE utility included in Corel VENTURA 4.2, to insure the file is linked correctly. Multiple Style Sheets in a Single Publication: Corel VENTURA 7 has one style sheet for one publication. In previous versions each chapter could have a style sheet, and therefore when converting publications that used multiple style sheets the user will be prompted with the Convert previous styles dialog box. The Use All Tags option will convert the publication preserving all the styles of each tag. It does this by renaming any duplicate tags. Corel VENTURA 7 is not limited by the number of tags used in a publication, but as the number of tags increase the publication may become more difficult to manage. The Use Only One Tag option will keep the properties of only one tag, making the final publication easy to manage, but tags with the same name in different style sheets with different properties will have the same properties. This may result in the publication changing significantly. Corel VENTURA will prompt for a priority list of style sheets. Corel VENTURA maintains the properties of the tag within the style sheet which appears closest to the top of the list for any duplicate tag. The Custom option allows the user to specify which tags are renamed and which tags are not used. While this option requires more time and knowledge of the style sheets used, it is worth the extra time because the publication can keep all properties of the previous styles and it will be easier to manage. With the Custom and Use All Tags options, Corel VENTURA 7 will rename paragraphs to an appropriate tag (prefix-tag name, tag name-suffix, or specified tag name) in all text files using the renamed tag in the publication.
