One of the most exciting features of Corel VENTURA™ 7 is the ability to publish to the Internet. This is done with HTML and a new technology called Corel Barista™ Note: Before attempting to convert any publication, ensure that the most recent maintenance release has been installed. The latest release is Revision C, build 1465. To check the build installed, start Corel VENTURA, and click Help, About Corel VENTURA. If the revision is older than 7.1465, contact Customer Service. HTML Hyper-Text Markup Language (HTML) is the traditional encoding language used to display a document on the Internet. The coding resembles that used by older typesetting machines, word processors, and desktop publishing programs such as Corel VENTURA. With Corel VENTURA 7, the conversion to HTML can be automatic or manual. Corel VENTURA 7 takes care of the details by default when converting to HTML code. The cross-references and Table of Contents will become active hyperlinks that can be clicked on to move to that part of the document on the World Wide Web (WWW). All graphic files will be converted into *.GIF or *.JPG. The titles and headlines will be published big and bold. The advantages of HTML are: • Documents can be viewed by all text or graphic based WWW browsers available on the market. • HTML documents can be quickly edited as needed with an HTML editor such as Corelฎ WEB.DESIGNER. • HTML is platform independent. • HTML documents can be printed. The disadvantages of HTML are: • The HTML document may not appear exactly as created in Corel VENTURA 7. • The document displays differently depending on the WWW browser used. • Fonts default to the browser settings. • Layout choices available to any DTP or word processing packages cannot easily be replicated. Corel VENTURA 7 formatting not supported by HTML: • Multiple column layouts • Booklet and tent card layouts • Tabs and indents • Vertical ruling lines • Headers and Footers • Graphic objects created with Drawing tools • Frame captions • Type effects such as background color and drop caps • Frame ruling lines • Frame anchoring positions other than inline • Text and picture in the same frame. Note: Text takes precedence with pictures appearing as a tiled background • Equations HTML features not supported by Corel VENTURA 7: • Image maps • Animated *.GIFs. They become regular GIF 87a files when imported into Corel VENTURA 7. • Linking from graphic to text • Embedded CGI scripts HTML Design Tips Care and planning are required to get the best results when preparing a Corel VENTURA 7 publication for publishing to the Internet. • Everything that appears on the base page in Corel VENTURA 7, will appear on the main document when converted to HTML. • Everything, other than images that are in frames, will appear as a text link. • Multi-chapter publications will be presented in frames, with every chapter as a hypertext link. • If using graphics, small graphics download faster than large graphics. If possible, use thumbnail pictures that people have the choice to click on to see the larger (and slower to load) picture. • Use cross-references and a Table of Contents to help people navigate your site. People on the WWW expect to have control over what they read on the web. • *.JPG images are compressed and download faster than *.GIF. • Give the frames in Corel VENTURA 7 an applicable name. This will make more sense to a user when a hyper-link is placed in the HTML document. • Since columns cannot be created in HTML, you can use tables in Corel VENTURA 7 to give a 2 or 3 column look. How to use HTML When the Corel VENTURA 7 publication is complete, click File, Publish as, HTML. You are able to control some options, such as graphic type, font size conversion etc. Refer to the online Help for more information. After completing this, the .HTM document will be ready for viewing in any web browser. You can instantly view the HTML document on your computer by clicking the Publish button if a Web Browser such as Netscape is installed on the computer. To post it to the Internet, you must contact an Internet Service Provider. Common Questions about HTML: Q Why doesn't my document look the same as it does in Corel VENTURA 7? A There are formatting limitations in HTML. Refer to the Limitations of HTML section in the online Help. Q Why are my graphics converting to hypertext links? I want them to be inline images that display full size. A You probably have placed text in the same frame as the graphic. Only frames that contain pure graphic files will convert to inline images. Right-click the frame, select Remove from Frame. Select the text file. Q Why are all of my images appearing at the bottom of the HTML document when I view it with my Web browser? A In the Corel VENTURA 7 publication, the graphics must be anchored. Refer to the online Help for more information. Q How can I use Corel VENTURA 7 to create an HTML document from scratch? A Corel VENTURA 7 is not an HTML editor. The formatting capabilities of Corel VENTURA 7 are superior to those in HTML, so your document will look different on the Internet. The Publish as HTML command is for those people who have created a Corel VENTURA 7 document, and then want an easy way to translate it to HTML. If it is a long document or complicated catalogue, the HTML conversion feature can save months of work. If you wish to create a new Web page, try installing the Corelฎ WEB.SiteBuilder and the Corelฎ WEB.DESIGNER that is included with Corel VENTURA 7. Insert CD-ROM #1 and click Start, Run. Type X:\WEBSETUP. (Where X is the drive letter of the CD-ROM) on the Open command line. Perform a Custom install to add the above components. Q What are the Internet programs that ship with Corel VENTURA 7? Do I need to use them with Corel VENTURA 7? A The Internet products in the Corel VENTURA 7 Suite are optional. Corel VENTURA 7 can convert a publication into HTML. However, because Corel VENTURA 7 formatting is more elaborate than HTML, you may need to touch up your document to get it looking better. You can use Corelฎ WEB.DESIGNER for this task. Import the *.HTM document into Corel WEB.DESIGNER. You can use either Corel WEB.DESIGNER or Corel WEB.SiteBuilder to create a web page from scratch. Corel Barista Corel Barista is a Java-based technology, that maintains the original look and formatting of your Corel VENTURA 7 publication when it is published to the Web. Java is a simple programming language which creates small programs called applets. These applets are for the WWW and are downloaded to a computer when they are accessed through the Web page. You may have seen Java applets used to animate logos and icons on the WWW. Corel VENTURA 7 converts your document into Java language. Java is being used increasingly on the net for more complicated procedures and features. Corel has taken Java to a new level with Corel Barista. Your Corel Barista document is downloaded, along with other control files called classes, to the Web browser. When the Web page is accessed, the class files are activated, and your Corel Barista document is recreated on their screen, looking the same as your original document. Even the fonts will be the same with TrueDoc (TM) font technology, which sends pictures of your fonts along with the applet. The advantages of Corel Barista are: • The document appears exactly the way you designed it, including columns, special characters and placement of graphics. • It is platform independent. • Corel Barista's document content is accessible to Web search engines such as Lycos(c) or Yahoo, which is a unique advantage over publishing WYSIWYG documents through the use of portable document plug-ins such as Envoy or Acrobat. The disadvantages of Corel Barista are: • Corel Barista documents can only be viewed with java-enabled browsers such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. (The number of java-savvy browsers is growing very quickly.) • Graphics intensive publications may be slower to load than HTML, since you cannot make images separate links. Separate links can reduce the overhead of initial loading time. • Corel Barista cannot be printed because of present limitations in Java technology • Corel Barista does not support hypertext links. • Extended characters are not supported. • The space between text in a Corel Barista document may vary on some computers since Corel Barista uses a Standard VGA resolution for character placement calculations. As screen resolution is increased the placement of individual characters will become misaligned. • Since Java Technology is new and constantly changing, Corel Barista's performance will be directly affected by any changes. Corel Barista Design Tips: • Set Graphics, Format to JPEG. It loads faster than GIF, and most browsers that are java-compliant can see JPEG images. • The file created by Corel VENTURA (with an .HTM extension) must be saved in the BARISTA folder along with the *.CLASS files. How to use Corel Barista: For testing, save your Corel Barista document into the BARISTA folder on the hard drive. When you click File, Publish as, Barista, it will open the Web browser and display the document. For your Corel Barista document to be seen on the Internet, you must contact an Internet Service Provider (ISP). They will explain the method for placing the Corel Barista and *.CLASS files onto the Internet Server. Copy your Corel Barista document, along with all the *.CLASS files, including all the folders in the folder structure, to the server. Your files must be in the BARISTA folder. The name of the BARISTA folder can be changed if necessary: The directory structure should contain the following files on the server. BARISTA (The name for this directory does not have to be BARISTA) Corel (11 *.CLASS files, plus font information for TrueDoc(TM)) CGEGRAPHICS 3 *.CLASS files GRAPHICS 12 *.CLASS files FILL 11 *.CLASS files text 1 *.CLASS file UI 3 *.CLASS files UTIL 7 *.CLASS files Ensure the virtual drive and folder mapping on the ISP's server is correct. When people access your file, the Web server software is pre-set to look in a particular folder on the computer. However, your files may not be located in that folder because of the special requirements of Corel Barista. There are two ways to resolve this: One, have the Web server mapping changed to point to the Corel Barista folder by default or two, rename the Corel Barista folder to match the name in the Web server software. Then, when the Web page is accessed, the *.CLASS files will be used, and it will appear on the java enabled browser. Common Questions about Corel Barista Q Why doesn't my browser appear when I click the Publish button? A You may not have an Internet browser installed on the computer, or you may not have the browser setup to start automatically. Refer to the online Help in the Internet browser. Q Why does the Web browser open, and generated an error indicating *.CLASS files were not loaded, when I click the Publish button? A The Corel Barista .HTM is not in the proper folder. Click File, Publish As, Corel Barista. Under Main Corel Barista Document, ensure the file is being placed in the X:\COREL \VENTURA7\BARISTA folder. Alternatively, copy all the *.CLASS files, and all the folders in the Corel Barista document into the same folder the *.HTM file is located. Q Why does a small X appear on the screen in the Web browser when I click the Publish button? A Your web browser may not be Java enabled. Q I've placed my Corel Barista document on the Internet server, but when I access the page, nothing appears. What should I do? A You must also transfer the *.CLASS files to the same folder as your Corel Barista .HTM file. Refer to the How to use Corel Barista section of the online for more information. Q Why doesn't anything appear when I access my page? I've placed my Corel Barista document on the Internet server, and copied all the *.CLASS files. A Most often, this is because all the *.CLASS files included in the folders were not copied, or the original file structure was not maintained when transferred to the server. Another possibility is that the drive and folder mapping on the ISP's server may not be correct. The Web server points to a certain folder as the default folder. Change the pointer to the Corel Barista folder, or rename the Corel Barista folder to match the name in the Web server software. Q Why is the font kerning is incorrect when I access the Corel Barista Page? A This occurs on some computers with some fonts. It appears to be affected by the resolution of the screen that is being used. The higher the resolution, the higher the chance that some fonts may not have correct spacing. The Courier, Times New Roman and Arial True Type Fonts are the fonts that will give you the best display.
