# 5706- Headers and Footers Headers and footers in Corel VENTURA™ 8 are used to place information that should appear on the top and bottom of many pages. Headers and footers make it easy to place titles and page/chapter/section numbers. They are managed easily if created in the Page Tags. The headers and footers are enabled by default in a new publication. To create a header or footer without using a preset format 1. Click View, Page Tag. 2. Click any Page Tag base frame. 3. Click Page, Show Header or Page, Show Footer. The height of the header or footer will be the same as the top or bottom margin of the base frame. The height can be changed by clicking the header frame, and clicking Format, Frame Tag Properties, Placement tab, unchecking Size Frame To Fit Text, and changing the Height. 4. By default the Size Frame To Fit Text is on and automatically adjusts the frame when text is entered. 5. To insert Page, Chapter, Figure numbers, or Date and Time, click the Insert button on the toolbar and a fly out menu will appear with the options. Changing individual pages When header and footer formats are created in the Page Tag, they will appear in any page using that Page Tag. It may be desirable to change the header and/or footer for an individual page. In Corel VENTURA™ 8 override headers and footers for an individual page or prevent the header or footer from appearing on a selected page. To override Page Tag headers and footers on a selected page 1. Click View, Page Layout. 2. Click the frame of the header or footer you want to override. 3. Edit the text and formatting directly.. Note: Changes made in Page Layout to the header or footer will be lost if the Page Tag is reapplied. To restore the Page Tag click Page, Apply Page Tag. To remove the header or footer appearing on a certain page, click Page, and click Show Header or Show Footer to remove the check marks. Formatting Headers or footers Once a header or footer is created, many settings affect the look and location of text in the header or footer. To adjust the space above or below the header or footer 1. Click the header or footer frame. 2. Click Format, Frame Tag Properties. - To change the space between the header or footer text and the edge of the page, adjust the Top or Bottom Inside Margins on the Margin tab. Please note that the "Size Frame to fit text" must be disabled first. Click View, Page Tags, before making these adjustments, if you want them to apply to all pages that use that Page Tag. The appearance of the text for the header or footer is controlled through the Paragraph tag. By default, the Paragraph tag name is Z_HEADER or Z_FOOTER. This is only the default tag name, and any tag name may be used. To change the tag settings for a header or footer 1. Click the header or footer text. 2. Click Format, Paragraph Tag Properties or right click the Z_HEADER or Z_FOOTER listing in the tag windows and choose Paragraph Tag Properties. The settings most often changed for header and footer tags are Fonts, Space, and Tabs. Tabs are very useful for arranging left, center, and right entries in the one tag. To copy or mirror the header or footer from one page to another, select View, Page Tags, and click the Mirror or Copy To Facing Page icons on the Property bar. Refer to the online Help for a description of these icons. When screen resolution is set to 640 by 480, move or customize the Property bar. Running headers Running headers and footers are used to indicate that text is part of a topic or a section. The Current match option provides more control than the First and Last match options of the information placed in headers or footers. With Current match, you can create running headers and footers, which indicate clearly that a topic is continued from a section started on an earlier page. If the first paragraph on a page uses the tag specified in the Tag Window list box, the text of that paragraph is printed as part of the header or footer. Otherwise, the text of the last occurrence of the Secondary tag is printed as part of the header of footer. To create running headers or footers (First, Last or Current Match) 1. Click View, Page Tags.. 2. Click the Page Tag base frame. 3. Click Page, Show Header, or Page, Show Footer. 4. Click inside the header or footer frame. 5. For a First Match, click the First Match button on the toolbar, and click the first Paragraph tag that you want Corel VENTURA to look for on that page. 6. For a Last Match, click the Last Match button on the toolbar, then click the last Paragraph tag that you want Corel VENTURA to look for on that page. This will usually apply to footers. 7. For a Current Match, click the Current Match button on the toolbar, then click the Paragraph Tag that you want Corel VENTURA to look for. Note: Corel VENTURA will only search the first paragraph of the page. Troubleshooting headers or footers - If a RED X appears in the header or footer, the content of the frame is too large for the frame. Try any combination of the following steps: 1. Don't let Corel VENTURA 8 automatically size the header or footer to fit the text. Change the frame margins settings under the Margins tab. Ensure that the Size Frame to Fit Text check box is disabled before making these changes. Select the header or footer frame, and click Format, Frame Tag Properties, Placement tab, and disable the Size Frame to Fit Text check box. 2. Certain settings in the header or footer Paragraph tag may eliminate the RED X. Click Tools, Tag Window. Right click the header or footer tag from the Tag window and select Paragraph Tag Properties. The default names for the header and footer tags are Z_HEADER and Z_FOOTER. Change any of the following settings: - Reduce the font size of the Paragraph Tag Properties inside the header or footer. - Reduce the Paragraph Tag Properties settings for Inter-line, Above, and Below spacing. These settings are found on the Space tab.
