Contents

If you are installing client products from a Hyperion Essbase patch release, you must install server products to the same patch level. For example, if you install a Patch 2 client, you must also install the Patch 2 server. Using older server versions with newer client versions is not recommended and is not supported.

Patch Installation Overview

This file describes problems corrected by one or more Hyperion Essbase patches. Even if you have only one of the problems fixed in one of the patches, you need to perform a full patch installation. You can install this patch by downloading the appropriate files from the Hyperion Solutions Web site, or by installing from CD-ROM. For detailed information about Hyperion Essbase installations, see the Hyperion Essbase Installation Notes.

Hyperion Essbase patches are cumulative, beginning with Patch 1 of Release 5.0.2. That is, each 5.0.2 patch contains new fixes, plus all the fixes for the previous patches.

Installing Patches from the Hyperion Solutions Web Site

The patch installation is similar to a full Hyperion Essbase installation, except that your sample applications, databases, and data files are not reinstalled. So the Hyperion Essbase installation will not affect your existing applications and databases. However, it is always a good idea to back up your applications and databases before an installation. Follow the patch installation instructions for the appropriate platform:

Windows NT/ 2000 or Windows Servers and Clients

UNIX Servers and Clients

1. Make sure Hyperion Essbase is not running when you perform the patch installation procedure.

2. Before downloading the appropriate executable files, create a temporary local directory on the server or client machine, as appropriate.

3. Connect to Hyperion's Technical Support Web site. If you do not already have access to Hyperion's Technical Support Web service, ask your company's support contact to:

4. Log in.
5. Click Patch Central from Product Releases category under the section, "Support."
6. Select Hyperion Essbase OLAP Server and Patch Central from Product and Display combo box drop-down lists respectively.
7. Submit the checklist.
8. Select the appropriate package for your release and platform.
9. Download the appropriate files to the temporary directory you created. For more information, see Files to Download .

   To install more than one patch file, download the files into separate temporary directories before installing, or download and install one file, delete the file, and then download the next file.

10. Unzip the file to the temporary directory by typing the name of the file (without the extension) from a command prompt, or by double-clicking the file.

    The executable file decompresses and runs SETUP.EXE, which launches the installation program.

11. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform a full Hyperion Essbase installation. Install the patch over your existing installation, normally in C:\ESSBASE.

12. After the installation is complete, you may entirely delete the temporary directory.

UNIX Servers and Clients

On the AIX platform, the patch installation disables SQL Interface. SQL Interface must be reinstalled or reconfigured after installing the patch.

1. Make sure Hyperion Essbase is not running when you perform the patch installation procedure.

2. Before downloading the appropriate .tar files, create a temporary local directory on the server or client machine, as appropriate.

3. Connect to Hyperion's Technical Support Web site at:

   http://custserv.hyperion.com/support/index.cfm

4. Click "Patch Central."

5. Download the appropriate files to your temporary directory. For more information, see Files to Download.

6. To untar a file, enter the following command:

   tar -xf filename.tar

   from the temporary directory containing the .tar file. This command extracts the files necessary to perform a complete installation.

7. Run essinst to launch the installation program.

8. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform a full Hyperion Essbase installation.

9. After the files are expanded, you can delete the .tar file.

Installing Patches from CD-ROM

The patch installation is similar to a full Hyperion Essbase installation, except that your sample applications, databases, and data files are not reinstalled. Your existing applications and databases are not affected in any way. However, it is always a good idea to back up your applications and databases before an installation.

On the AIX platform, the patch installation disables SQL Interface. SQL Interface must be reinstalled or reconfigured after installing the patch.

3. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

4. Select the appropriate executable files to copy to your local drive, based on the Files to Download section.

5. Copy the appropriate files to your temporary.

   To install more than one patch file, download the files into separate temporary directories before installing, or download and install one file, delete the file, and then download the next file.

6. Follow the instructions for the appropriate platform:

   For Windows platforms:

   • Expand the executable file by typing the name of the file (without the extension) from a command prompt, or by double-clicking the file.
     The executable file decompresses and runs SETUP.EXE, which launches the installation program.

   For UNIX platforms:

   • To untar a file, enter the following command:

Streamlined Installation Process

The Hyperion Essbase installation program has been made more efficient. The updated installation program:

• Improves installation speed when files do not need to be updated.
• Prevents accidental installation of an older release.

As of Release 5.0.2 Patch 3, when you install over a previous release, only older versions of files in the ESSBASE/Bin directory are replaced. Any files in the current installation that are of the same version as existing installed files are not replaced.

Reverting to an Earlier Release

If you are reverting to an earlier release of Hyperion Essbase, you must delete all files from the Bin directory except for ESSBASE.SEC and ESSBASE.CFG before you install the earlier release.
