What's new in version 7.1

Changes to Rational Synergy 7.1 are summarized below.

Branding

The Telelogic Synergy product name was changed to Rational Synergy. The splash screen and About dialog box were updated. On Windows, the installation path, Start menu entry, and desktop icons were updated.

Improved support for component-based development

The following improvements were made to support component-based development in Rational Synergy:

  • Switch to a new version of a subcomponent is easier. When a user uses a new version of a subcomponent project or product, the new version is added to the current task. This ensures that when the user checks in changes, the changes are propagated through the normal development and test lifecycle to other team members.
  • Using new subcomponents and setting up rules for using new components is easier.

When a build manager creates a baseline, Rational Synergy automatically creates two component tasks, one for projects and one for products. The component tasks are a handle for using those components in other releases.

The Process Rules dialog box provides a new dialog box to easily find and add component tasks to the process rules for a given release. Build managers can set up rules, such as:
    • Include subcomponent projects from a specific release and baseline
    • Include the latest published products from a specific release
    • Include the newest released projects and products of a subcomponent (from any release)
    • Include the latest published projects from a specific release, any component (for example, a team who has many subcomponents with two-week release cycles can set up rules to include all subcomponents for release */week42, where * can be any component)

The creation of component tasks can be turned off per release if it is not needed, for example, if a specific component release is not meant to be reusable by other teams.

Upgrade does not automatically create component tasks for baselines that were created prior to the upgrade. A new command is provided to create component tasks for pre-existing baselines as needed. See the "ccm baseline" command for details. This command is available in both the traditional and Web mode CLIs. However, the command is only documented in the Rational Synergy CLI Help - web mode document (English version or Japanese version).

DCM supports the transfer of component tasks. They are included automatically when a baseline is transferred, or you can add a component task directly to a transfer set to transfer that component. You must install patches to previous releases in order to exchange data between Rational Synergy 7.1 and those releases using DCM.

  • Rational Synergy 7.1 provides full support for baselines containing mixed releases. By default, when you create a baseline for a project hierarchy that contains mixed releases, the baseline includes all projects and releases in the hierarchy.

Starting in Rational Synergy 7.1, the subcomponents with different releases can use the top-level baseline; update the process rules to refer to the hierarchy baseline. A new command option is provided for copying the baseline rules from the parent process rules to the other process rules; see "ccm process_rule -copy -baseline_rules_only".
  • In previous releases, when you created a baseline, if Telelogic Synergy detected that some of the tasks in the project grouping properties were not included in all of the projects, those tasks were marked untrusted and continued to be shown in the "tasks on top of the baseline" in the Project Grouping Properties. The update operation still includes the tasks in the project grouping, but they are no longer shown in tasks on top of the baseline, nor used in baseline compare, giving a more accurate view of which tasks were introduced in the newer baseline.

The Rational Synergy CLI provides the ability to view the additional untrusted tasks.
  • When updating a project, if there are no candidates for the root directory, the update operation will give an error and stop. This prevents the root directory and all members from disappearing, for example, when there is no baseline to provide a root directory candidate. This change applies to all interfaces.

Usability improvements

The History dialog box was updated to manage a complex history containing many versions. A new macro view provides context and improved navigation. A new list view provides improved sorting and filtering to enable users to quickly find a specific version and navigate to it. Show only the selected version, predecessors and successors with one click to traverse complex histories. Increase or decrease the font size and number of versions shown with one click.

Selecting release values was improved. By default, Rational Synergy saves the most recently-used release values at the top of the Release drop-down list so that users do not need to expand the release tree. These release values are referred to as favorites. Users can set preferences for how many release favorites will appear and which values should be permanently displayed in the Release drop-down list.

Support for link-based work areas in Web Mode

Link-based work areas are now supported for UNIX clients running in Web Mode. Link-based work areas in Web Mode behave the same as link-based work areas in Traditional Mode, and are fully supported in the Rational Synergy graphical and command line interfaces.

Note: Rational Synergy Web Mode clients running over a Wide Area Network (WAN) require NFS visibility from the client system to the Rational Synergy server system in order to use link-based work areas.

Updates to the Rational Synergy CLI for Web Mode

The Rational Synergy CLI no longer requires the user to type the password as an option to the "ccm start" command on Windows. A user can use the new command "ccm set_password" to save an encrypted copy of his or her password to a file. The new option "ccm start -fpw <file>" reads and uses the password from the specified file. This provides a more secure option for Windows-based scripts.

The Rational Synergy CLI has the following improvements in version 7.1:

  • The "ccm attr -copy" subcommand was implemented.
  • The "ccm baseline" command was extended to support creating and displaying component tasks:
    • A new "ccm baseline -create_component_tasks" subcommand can be used to create component tasks for a baseline.
    • "ccm baseline -show" now shows component tasks if they exist.
  • The "ccm copy_project", "ccm create -t project", and "ccm wa" commands were updated with options to support link-based work areas on UNIX.
  • The "ccm dcm" subcommands and options were completed, and several new commands were added, including:
    • ccm dcm -delete -packages
    • ccm dcm -modify -settings
    • ccm dcm -show -el
    • ccm dcm -show -packages
    • ccm dcm -show -receive_lock
    • ccm dcm -show -settings
  • The "ccm delimiter" command was extended to show the version delimiter.
  • The "ccm finduse" command was completed and extended to support the following subcommands:
    • ccm finduse -folder
    • ccm finduse -folder_template
    • ccm finduse -change_request

Improved administration for Web Mode

By default, a single CCM server serves all Rational Synergy databases. For improved scalability when supporting large numbers of users, you can create additional CCM servers on different physical servers to serve different Rational Synergy databases. All back-end Rational Synergy sessions will run on the physical server that hosts the CCM server.

Rational Synergy 7.1 improves the ability to manage which CCM servers serve which Rational Synergy databases with the following features:

  • When creating a new Rational Synergy database using the unpack, load, or upgrade commands, specify the CCM server to serve the database using the new -url CCMServerAddress option.
  • Reassign Rational Synergy databases to different servers using the new web administration interface. To use the web administration interface, navigate to the URL CCMServerAddress/admin. The page shows all databases and their assigned servers. If a database is actively being served by a server, you must login to the admin interface for that server in order to change it.

A Rational Synergy end user can now change his or her RDS password via the Rational Synergy CCM server by navigating to the URL CCMServerAddress/user.

Deployment of Windows clients

Rational Synergy Windows client users can now install and patch their Rational Synergy client installations using the Rational Synergy deployment feature without having Administrator privilege on the Windows desktop.

If the user installing Rational Synergy has Administrator privilege, the Rational Synergy client is installed for all users of the local machine, and requires the end user to have Administrator privilege to update the client installation in the future. This is how the client behaved in previous releases.

If the user installing Rational Synergy does not have Administrator privilege, the Rational Synergy client is installed for the current user only. The registry entry is stored under HKEY_CURRENT_USER rather than HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. This enables the user to automatically update/patch his or her own client from the server using the Rational Synergy deployment feature.

Note: Windows Vista has additional security restrictions that may prevent automatic deployment.

Large file support

Rational Synergy now supports files larger than 2 GB on all platforms and in all user interfaces.

New archiver

Rational Synergy 7.1 includes a new underlying archiver used to archive source files. The new archiver is scalable, reliable, and fast, and is used for both ascii and binary data types. This change is transparent to all users except the administrator.

Starting in Rational Synergy 7.1, archiving is asynchronous for fast file check in. Upon check in, source files are synchronized from the work area to the Rational Synergy server, but the check in operation does not wait until the file is archived before completing. This improves the performance of check in, especially for large files.

All related tools and commands such as "ccm clean_cache" and "ccm archive_check" were updated to behave appropriately to work with the new archiver and asynchronous archiving behavior.

Each database has one back-end session dedicated to archiving checked-in files for all users of that database. Administrators may want to configure the CCM server to increase the number of back-end sessions for a given database to account for this dedicated session. See the IBM Rational Synergy Administration Guide for more information about configuring the server.

APAR

CR ID

Synopsis

N/a

R#27994

The red diamond on the Task Properties Change Requests tab that indicates a CR is required is not cleared after a CR is added.

PM10136

R#35760

When a user tries to start a 7.1 client against a 7.1.0.1.01 server and database, the GUI gives an unhandled runtime exception. Instead it should give a message that the client and server versions are not compatible.

PM11073

R#35922

After a network outage between the Synergy server and RDS, starting Synergy Web Mode sessions fails for users with the erroneous message "Invalid user or password"; the Synergy Web Server needs to be restarted before users can login.

PM11593

R#36025

The Current Task is sometimes displayed only as a series of dots (ellipses).

PM15209

R#36537

On the Project Grouping context menu, "Automatically Update Baseline & Tasks" is unchecked the first time it is opened.

PM15784

PM16348

R#36848

Expanding keywords for empty attributes puts a space in the source file.

PM16887

R#36932

DCM receive fails to transition a baseline to the correct state (for example, released) if the transition is not permitted in that database.

PM17007

R#36957

If a user changes his or her password via DOORS or Change with a Synergy session running, Synergy operations start to fail without giving a good message. When this happens, users should be required to login again.

N/a

R#36988

If a user changes his or her password and the RDS server is restarted a short time later, Synergy sessions fail to start with the message "Invalid user or password" even when using the correct user and password.

PM17272

R#36996

The root directory of a Windows drive (e.g., "C:\") cannot be used as a work area path

N/a

R#37073

"Compare with Predecessor" for an ascii object with more than one version fails with the message "Workarea modification disallowed"

PM18190

R#37140

On UNIX with a Synergy Web Mode client, in a copy-based project hierarchy with relative work areas, when the update operation selects a different version of a static subproject, it fails with the message "Unable to remove work area symbolic link for subproject"

N/a

R#37142

If Synergy login fails because the RDS password has expired, Synergy should give a message to that effect rather than giving the message "Invalid user or password." (See also RFE 6598.)

PM18316

R#37149

The Synergy "ccmsrv restore" command with the option '-y' prompts the user for confirmation. The purpose of the -y flag is to proceed running the command without prompting.

N/a

R#37179

Checking in a file to the checkpoint state using the new Synergy CLI fails with the message "Couldn't remotely chmod"

PM18795

R#37202

The "ccm make" command hangs on Windows in the new Synergy CLI with Synergy iFix 7.1.0.1.03 installed.

PM19299

R#37295

ESD authentication fails caused by interrupts to the ESD process. Synergy should handle ESD interruptions rather than treating this case as a fatal error.

N/a

R#37320

When starting a process from a user-defined Synergy menu extension, the PATH environment variable is set incorrectly if it is not all upper case.

PM19806

R#37384

After you create a new release and then delete it, you cannot create another new release using the same component name, because it requires you to enter a baseline release but none exists

PM20040

R#37395

When sync'ing new files into Synergy through the graphical interface, the label in the Task Explorer is truncated

PM20044

R#37399
