About this Interim Fix

This interim fix contains fixes for SMS over SMPP service implementation of IBM® WebSphere® Telecom Web Services Server (TWSS), Version 6.1.1. This interim fix is recommended for all customers with a TWSS 6.1.1 installation.

This is a cumulative fix, which contains all fixes for SMS over SMPP service implementation  since the 6.1.1 release. It includes SMPP fixes from the 6.1.1 fixpack 1 and new fixes.

Fix and update history

The following fixes are included from fixpack 1

1). Provides configurable maximum message size in Admin console.

Defect No: 10843

This allows the user to a choose maximum message size greater than 254 bytes in order to support the payload functionality.

2). Message payload has been implemented.

Defect No: 10638

By using payload, users can send messages up to 64K in size.

The following new fixes are included

1).  Implementing send Enquire_link PDU.

APAR : LI72202

Per the SMPP 3.4 spec, the “ENQUIRE_LINK” message can be sent by either the ESME or SMSC and is used to provide a confidence check of the communication path between an ESME and an SMSC. In this fix, we have implemented the send ENQUIRE_LINK  in which the SMS over SMPP service implementation server sends the Enquire_link request at regular intervals to all SMSCs to which it has been connected.

There are two new configurable parameters to control the ENQUIRE_LINK PDU. (You can see them in TWSS admin console).

 -  Enquire_link enable – Either true or false. By default, it is set to true.

 -  Enquire_link time interval – A numeric value in minutes. By default, the value is 5 minutes. The minimum value to set is 1 minute and the maximum is 60 minutes.

Changes in the above fields take effect immediately, meaning that if you disable the Enquire_link enable flag, MDS does not send the enquire link request starting with the next enquire link cycle. Similarly, if you change the Enquire_link time interval, the next enquire link cycle is set accordingly.

2). The terminated SMPP connection does not seem to be removed.

Defect : 11421

When an SMPP connection gets terminated (either by the SMPP server or after a network problem), it does not seem to be removed from the connections cache. As a consequence, the next attempt to send an SMS ("submit_sm" PDU) or create a new SMS notification will try to use the same connection, but the connection is closed.

In this fix, the terminated SMPP connections are removed from the cache.

3). MO message destination should match with or without "tel:"
Defect : 11422

Mapping between the SmsServiceActivationNumber and the target number received from the SMPP server should match with and without "tel:"

4). Send charging information to the back end network element.
Defect : 11516

Charging Information needs to be sent to the back-end network element.

Installation requirements

Hardware requirements

Hardware requirements for TWSS are included in the information center and have not changed since version 6.1.1. Refer to the following information for details:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wtelecom/v6r1/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.twss.doc/com_prereqs.html

Software requirements

Software requirements for TWSS are included in the information center. Refer to the following information for details: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wtelecom/v6r1/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.twss.doc/com_prereqs.html

In addition to the prerequisites listed in the information center, the following maintenance fixes are required:

WebSphere Application Server Version 6.1.0.3 must be applied to the base WebSphere Application Server for the Service Implementations. The fix pack can be retrieved from the following link: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=180&uid=swg24013772

Additionally, the WebSphere Application Server iFix 6.1.0.3-WS-WAS-IFPK31203N-32.pak is also required. The fix is located at http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24014163

Installation instructions

Before you begin, ensure that the following steps have been completed:

  • Fix Pack 3 (WebSphere Application Server Version 6.1.0.3) has been applied to the application server where the Service Implementations are installed
  • iFix IFPK31203 has been applied to the application server where the Service Implementations are installed

Following are the steps to install this interim fix.

1. Extract the following fix tar file to a temporary folder.

IBM_WebSphere_Telecom_WebServices_Server_ParlayServices_6.1.1_1_IF000001.tar.gz

The fix has smppEAR.ear and SMPPConnector.rar files. When it is extracted, the files can be found in the following locations under the extract folder.

/ears/smpp/SmppEAR.ear

/rar/SMPPConnector.rar

2. Before installing please check whether smppEAR.ear, SMPPConnector.rar are already

installed in Websphere Application Server. If so, uninstall both.

3. Install the smppEAR and SMPPConnector rar from the fixpack package extracted above.

To install the smppEAR, refer to the following installation instructions:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wtelecom/v6r1/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.twss.install.doc/deploy_smpp_ear_t.html

To install the SMPPConnector rar, refer to the following installation instructions:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wtelecom/v6r1/topic/com.ibm.twss.install.doc/jca_adapter_t.html

4. Restart the WebSphere application server.

Check the information center documents for any setup changes.

Also, refer to the TWSS 6.1.1 fixpack 1 readme for more information on base TWSS and IMS service updates.
