Tivoli Storage Manager for AIX Quick Start

Installing Tivoli Storage Manager

You can use the following procedure to install the server, device support, AIX backup-archive client, AIX administrative command line client, and AIX application programming interface (API). The default installation directories are:

If you choose to install the default clients, they are registered with the following defaults:

Client ID Name Password
Administrative admin admin
Backup-archive client client

See Tivoli Storage Manager Installing the Clients for information on installing the administrative and backup-archive clients on platforms other than AIX. The clients for other platforms can be installed directly from the CD-ROM. If a CD-ROM drive is not available to the client platform, the files can be copied to a file server and distributed.

The instructions in this section are shown using the Software Management and Installation Tool (SMIT). You can also use Install and Update Software Manager (installm).

Note:Throughout this procedure, /dev/cd0 is used for CD-ROM. This may be different in your environment. Loading the server files can take several minutes.

Here is the SMIT procedure:

  1. Log in as the root user.
  2. Load the CD-ROM into the selected drive.
  3. From your desktop window, access SMIT and make selections according to the level of your AIX operating system.
Note:When you are changing the language capability, selection paths differ from those shown here. See Appendix E, National Language Support.

    Enter:

    +--------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
smit install_update &
    +--------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

    Then select:

    +--------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
Install and Update Software
Install and Update from the LATEST Available Software
    +--------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
  4. On the next window, select the device that you are using for the installation. You can enter the drive name in the window or click on List to access the device list.

If you click on List, select the CD-ROM drive that you are using for the installation (for example, /dev/cd0).

  5. Click on OK.
  6. Locate the line Software to Install.
Note: The values you set for the locale stanza variables in your /var/adm/ras/bosinst.data file control which translated TSM messages, help, and device selection messages in SMIT, in addition to U.S. English, are automatically installed. Languages available are U.S. English, Japanese, simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Korean, Italian, and German. The server installation defaults to U.S. English. See your AIX installation manual for details.
    1. To install all components listed in the table at step 7, continue at step 9.
    2. To selectively install components, click on List for the latest available software packages and continue at step 7.
  7. Select the TSM components (server, license, client) that you require. The following table lists the component fileset file names. For client fileset file names, see Tivoli Storage Manager Installing the Clients.

Fibre Channel Protocol Support

TSM support for Fibre Channel Protocol is delivered in the install package tivoli.tsm.devices.fcprte. This package and the SCSI-only support package, tivoli.tsm.devices.rte) are mutually exclusive. If you choose the Install and Update from LATEST Available Software option, the SCSI-only support is installed. You can install fibre channel protocol support in either of the following two ways:

The fileset prerequisites for fibre channel protocol support are:

Fileset Level
bos.rte 4.3.2.0 or later
devices.pci.df1000f7.rte 4.3.2.0 or later
devices.pci.df1000f7.com 4.3.2.4 or later
devices.pci.df1000f7.diag 4.3.2.2 or later
devices.common.IBM.fc.rte 4.3.2.3 or later

The Tivoli Storage Manager device definition menus and prompts in SMIT have changed for Fibre Channel Protocol support. The main menu for TSM has two options:

SCSI Attached Devices
Use this option to configure SCSI devices connected to a SCSI adapter in the host. Devices are configured by the subsequent menus which have not changed

Fibre Channel SAN Attached Devices
Use this option to configure devices connected to a Fibre Channel adapter in the host. Choose one of the following:

List Attributes of a Discovered Device
Lists attributes of a device known to the current ODM database.

FC Port ID:

This is the 24-bit FC Port ID(N(L)_Port or F(L)_Port), the address identifier that is unique within the associated topology where the device is connected. In the switch or fabric environment, it is usually determined by the switch, with the upper 2-bytes being non-zero. In a Private Arbitrated Loop, it is the Arbitrated Loop Physical Address(AL_PA), with the upper 2-bytes being zero. Please consult with your FC vendors to find out how an AL_PA or a Port ID is assigned

Mapped LUN ID

This is from a FC<->SCSI bridge (also, called a converter, router, or gateway) box, such as like IBM SAN Data Gateway (SDG) or Crossroads 4200. Please consult with your bridge vendors about how LUNs are currently mapped. It is recommended that LUN Mapped IDs not be changed.

WW Name

The World Wide Name of the port that the device is attached to. It is the 64-bit unique identifier assigned by vendors of FC components such as bridges or native FC devices. Please consult with your FC vendors to find out a port's WWN

Product ID

The product ID of the device. Please consult with your device vendors to determine the product ID.

Discover Devices Supported by TSM
This option discovers devices on a Fibre Channel SAN that are supported by TSM and makes them AVAILABLE. If a device is added to or removed from an existing SAN environment, rediscover devices by selecting this option. Devices must be discovered first so that current values of attributes of devices are shown in the List Attributes of a Discovered Device option. TSM-supported devices on FC SAN are tape drives, autochangers, and optical drives. All other device types, such as disk, are ignored by TSM device driver.

Remove All Defined Devices
This option removes all FC SAN-attached TSM devices whose state is DEFINED in the ODM database. If necessary, rediscover devices by selecting the Discover Devices Supported by TSM option after the removal of all defined devices

Remove a Device
This option removes a single FC SAN-attached TSM device whose state is DEFINED in the ODM database. If necessary, rediscover the device by selecting the Discover Devices Supported by TSM option after removal of a defined device.

To configure an FC SAN-attached device:

  1. Run the SMIT program.
  2. Select Devices.
  3. Select Tivoli Storage Manager Devices.
  4. Select Fibre Channel SAN Attached devices.
  5. Select Discover Devices Supported by TSM. The discovery process can take some time.
  6. Go back to the Fibre Channel menu, and select List Attributes of a Discovered Device.
  7. Note the 3-character device identifier, which you use when defining the device to TSM. For example, if a tape drive has the identifier mt2, specify /dev/mt2 as the device name. For example:
    +--------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
define drive lib1 drive2 device=/dev/mt2
    +--------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
