Downloading and Getting Started with Sample Applications

These instructions explain how to download the applications and get started using them.

To download and use the sample applications, proceed as follows:

  1. Download a sample application to your computer's disk.
  2. Unzip the application file to your WebSphere Studio workspace. A new directory is created based on the name of the downloaded application.
  3. In WebSphere Studio, open the File > New > Project > Simple > Project menu item.
  4. Click Next. In the New Project screen that appears, enter the name of the new directory that was created when you unzipped application. Click Finish.
  5. Open the RAD perspective. To do this, select the Window > Open Perspective > Other > RAD menu item. You should see the sample RAD application displayed in the Eclipse Navigator view.
  6. In the Navigator view, expand the node that was created for the sample application.
  7. Double-click the icon for the file with the .rad extension. The sample RAD application is displayed in the work area.

To connect to and remap your data sources, proceed as follows:
  1. In the RAD Builder, open the Data Source Management workbook.
  2. Select the Connected option and then click the Set Database button. The Database Properties dialog is displayed.
  3. Specify details of the database you are using.
To use the sample data source you downloaded, use the following parameters:
    • Database: SAMPLE
    • Database vendor type: Cloudscape, V5.0
    • JDBC driver: Other Cloudscape Driver
    • JDBC driver class: com.ibm.db2j.jdbc.DB2jDriver
    • Class Location: <your_workspace_location>\ TemplateLibrary\Sample Data Sources\db2j.jar
    • Connection URL: jdbc:db2j:Template Library\Sample Data Sources\SAMPLE
  4. Click Finish to connect to the database. Wait a few minutes until this process is completed.
  5. For each data source in the list, click the Remap button. This remaps the data source fields to the connected database.
  6. If you are using a database other than the sample one supplied, make sure all the fields are mapped at this time.

If you wish to use the sample application as a Template, you can add it to the Library as follows:
  1. In the Template Library view, right-click Template Library and choose Add category from the context menu. This will let you add a new category to the Template Library.
  2. Open the pull-down menu on the Properties icon and select Template Properties. Use the Template Properties workbook to specify the desired properties for your new template.
  3. Under the category, make sure to select the new category you just created.
  4. For the template icon, you can use the .gif file that appears in the directory created for the sample application you just downloaded.
  5. Open the pull-down menu on the Generation icon and select Save As Template. The application is saved as a template. You can now open the Application Template Wizard and continue working to further customize the template.
